Coherent Aerospace & Defense Inc, Emerging Products & Technologies (EP&T) Business Unit is seeking a Senior Integration & Test Engineer to plan, design, communicate, and execute the sequence of manufacturing, integration, and test operations for high performance electro-optomechanical assemblies, and to determine the following:  (1) integration & test build plan and manufacturing process flow bridging the structural and electric design teams with the assembly staff, (2) required assembly, alignment, and test tooling, (3) layout of manufacturing and test area to be used, (4) necessary equipment utilization and/or modification to machine, assemble, align, test, package, and transport component parts and/or final products and optical assemblies in support of the total manufacturing process, (5) Investigate, identify, and resolve engineering problems involved in the manufacturing of products and implement a smooth transition into routine production as appropriate.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The Sr. Integration and Test Engineer responsibilities include:

  • Integration and Test Engineering (60%)
  • Leads and coordinates integration and test engineering activities for assembly, alignment, and test tooling, development and implementation of new manufacturing and test processes. Work is accomplished without considerable direction to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for assembly/alignment and test plan development on assigned projects; determines methods and procedures on new assignments independently, and coordinates activities of other personnel; develops and releases assembly and alignment documentation, manufacturing work instructions, test plans and test documentation with assistance as required from design engineering and operations personnel.
  •  Supports proposal process by reviewing customer specifications, drawings and internal quotations; lays out conceptual manufacturing and test plans; works concurrently with design engineers to ensure product concepts and designs are manufacturable and designed for test using existing processes; identifies technical, manufacturing, or test equipment issues that require either exceptions or development activities.
  •  Responsible for red-lining router tasks with assistance from design engineering as required.
  • Resolves technical issues as they arise during manufacturing, integration, and testing with assistance as required from design engineering, quality engineering, and operations personnel; identifies root causes of manufacturing, integration, and test problems using analytical techniques; provides clear and concise corrective action reports. Exercises wide latitude to solve high level problems while developing new processes to address future issues.  Serves as subject matter expert for the organization.
  • Collaborates with quality engineering on the development of qualification and acceptance test procedures.
  • Partners with program management with technical advice and direction on assigned programs. Adheres to program financial goals and provides financial estimates and status updates to program management.
  • Partners with business development activities through participation in customer presentations and proposal preparation.
  • Provides insights and informed suggestions for new concepts from continuous learning and lessons learned experience.
  • Integration and Test Engineering Project/Process Ownership and Operations Support (30%)
  • Serves as the Manufacturing/Integration or Test Process Owner and leader for electro-opto-mechanical products, and is responsible to develop, document and trouble-shoot associated manufacturing/integration and test capabilities on assigned programs. Serves as a technical resource for lower level professionals. 
  •  Thoroughly documents new assembly, alignment, and test processes.  Before being used on production parts, assures all process changes are well thought out, documented, and communicated to all levels.
  •  Leads successful implementation of new manufacturing, alignment, and test processes in production.
  •  Troubleshoots product quality and production yield problems and leads corrective action teams. Identifies continuous improvement opportunities and champions corrective actions. 
  •  Supports manufacturing operations to ensure products are delivered on time. Contributes to department, divisional, or functional strategy.
  •  Participates in configuration control (CCD), change control (ECO, NOR, RCN), and MRB activities to support assigned programs.
  •  Assists Operations personnel in developing, documenting and implementing new equipment and new process maintenance procedures.
  •  Assists training of all operators, technicians, and engineers on new manufacturing, alignment, and test processes and process changes. Leads the I&TE group on responsibilities and delegates objectives and tasks to achieve goals and objectives. 
  •  Proactively takes actions to address customer needs and issues; follows up with customers regularly. Creates formal networks involving coordination among groups.
  • Health & Safety (10%)
  •  Ensures processes are evaluated and designed to meet all internal safety standards and regulatory guidelines.
  • Enforces all applicable company policies.
  •  Supports the health and safety officer by providing technical support for specific situations.
  • Performs all required surveys, studies and periodic checks.
  •  Promotes positive health and safety behaviors within the department.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Business Management, Quality Technology or STEM discipline and 7+ years of relevant experience or master’s degree and 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Prior experience in plant management, industrial engineering, and manufacturing operations is highly desirable.

Must have or able to obtain a DoD Secret clearance (or higher)

Preferred Skills And Experience:

  • Experience in Optical Quality Inspection, testing and process improvements for optics, fibers, and optical system quality for the Aerospace and Defense Industry
  • Experience in Optical and fiber component handling, cleaning of optical and fiber components.
  • Experience with calipers, micrometers, torque wrenches, test plates, electronic gauges, light sources, interferometers, autocollimators and working with automation of test equipment.
  • Opto-mechanical assembly techniques 
  • Optical alignment and optical alignment tools and methods
  • Metals, plating, conversion film, and coating materials for mechanical structures or reflective optical system substrates
  • Materials and mounting methods for opto-mechanical systems; preparation and use of primers, one and two part adhesives, and elastomers
  • Optical element cleaning, handling, and packaging
  • Clean room protocols and processes
  • Understanding of electrical cable and harness build workmanship and EMI suppression techniques.
  • Analytical, decision making, and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of thermal, mechanical, vibration, and shock effects on optical systems
  • Mechanical metrology instruments and techniques and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Knowledge of optical and mechanical materials and fabrication processes
  • Experience using CAD software; SOLIDWORKS experience preferred
  • Optical design and analysis; hands-on experience with Zemax, CODE V, OSLO, etc. is a plus
  • Computer programming
  • Vendor/supplier sub-contract management including optics, mechanics, tooling fabrication, and optical coatings
  • Analysis, advising, and reporting on the feasibility of new projects

Working Conditions

  • Job operates in a professional office environment, manufacturing floor, and in clean room facilities
  • Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines
  • Work in a cubicle area – must be able to work in environment where employees are on the phone / speaking causing potential distractions throughout the day.
  • Noise level – Usually moderate for the manufacturing floor and clean room facilities
