SUMMARY:
The Medical Director is a member of the faculty (rank commensurate with experience). Responsibilities include ensuring that continuous and competent medical guidance for the clinically related program components is provided, classroom instruction, assisting students toward successful program completion, supervision of clinical instruction, communication with entities that participate in the education of students and participate in process development and improvement within the AA program. The Medical Director also participates in activities that promote the stature of the department and the campus and abides by the mandates set by the South University Board of Trustees, University Chancellor, University Vice President – Academic Affairs, Campus President, and the local Executive Committee.

KEY JOB ELEMENTS:
1. The Medical Director must organize, administer, continuously review, plan, and develop processes that ensure general effectiveness of clinical education in the program.
2. The Medical Director must have regular contact with all entities that participate in the education of the students
3. The Medical Director will ensure that continuous and competent medical guidance for the clinically related program components is provided, so that:
◦ Supervised clinical instruction meets current standards of acceptable practice
◦ Anesthesiologist assistant students learn, develop, and practice the knowledge and skills essential to successful professional interactions with physicians in the medical workplace
◦ The Medical Director will ensure that continuous and competent educational guidance is provided, so that the didactic demands placed by the clinical educational environment are adequately addressed by classroom curriculum design.
4. The Medical Director must serve as an advocate for the program within the medical and academic community.
5. The Medical Director should be an active member of the Program Advisory Committee.
6. The Medical Director must participate in the admissions process including review of applications, on-campus interviews and decisions on candidate acceptance.
7. The Medical Director must maintain the highest moral and ethical standards as an evaluator, medical professional and as a responsible member of society.
8. Administrative Tasks include but are not limited to the following:
◦ Assist with recruitment of qualified instructional faculty and clinical preceptors to participate in the program.
◦ Assist in negotiating with clinical facilities and sites to ensure AA access to adequate types of patient problems and clinical experiences to satisfy program clinical education goals and objectives.
◦ Attend and participate in Progress and Promotions Committee meetings quarterly.
◦ Participate in annual Advisory Committee Meetings.
◦ Participate in all continuing accreditation functions.
◦ Otherwise assist the AA Program Director as needed.
9. Educational Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
◦ Provide lectures to students in areas of expertise.
◦ Assist with ongoing evaluation and self-study of the program outcomes of in consultation with the involved faculty and preceptors. Areas to be addressed should include at a minimum: (1) Adequacy of student access to a diverse clinical experience and patient population (2) Quality of clinical supervision provided (3) Progress on educational outcomes (4) Appropriateness of the clinical practice activities in relation to the program’s educational outcomes (5) Quality of instruction and appropriateness of subject matter in the didactic phase of the curriculum (6) Appropriateness of evaluation methods used to determine student competency.
◦ Assist with evaluating student didactic and clinical performance in accordance with established objectives and educational outcomes.
◦ Provide counseling to students and assist the AA program director in counseling and supervising faculty and staff.
10. Other Miscellaneous responsibilities of the Medical Director include but are not limited to:
◦ Represent department and program at school and other organizational academic and social functions.
◦ Engage in community educational activities to promote AA practice and profession, to encourage increased utilization of AAs, and to recruit potential AA students.
◦ Remain clinically active and current in the practice of medicine.
OBLIGATIONS OF THE UNIVERSITY:
1. Refer to the policies in the Faculty Handbook.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• Be a licensed physician, practicing in the state of Florida.
• Be an anesthesiologist certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, the American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology or its successor.
• Hold a graduate degree in medicine.
• Have the requisite knowledge and skills to administer the clinical/academic aspects of the Anesthesiologist Assistant program.
• Be experienced in the delivery of educational and health care services.
• Possess a strong commitment to the purpose and goals of South University and the Anesthesiologist Assistant Program.
