Wood is currently seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to join our Eastern Canada Operations team. Reporting to the Civil / Structural Department Manager this position can be seated in either St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Fredericton, New Brunswick; Oakville, Ontario; or Sudbury Ontario. This role involves leading and conducting structural design analysis, preparing technical documentation, evaluations, and verifications for various structural systems.

The Role

As a Structural Engineer, you will collaborate with a team of engineers/technicians to provide client-focused solutions. This role has a primary requirement for relevant experience in industrial, hydro utilities and hydroelectric structures design. You will be part of the structural engineering team delivering projects in the Power and Process industries. This includes structural steel and reinforced concrete design for industrial buildings, substation steel structures and foundations, equipment support platforms and associated foundations, pipe racks, tank foundations, hydroelectric dams, sluiceways, abutments, piers and various other miscellaneous structures.

  • Provide structural design and technical support including calculations, design, design checks, and design drawing reviews from conceptual level to detailed design for large industrial operating facilities, and power distribution projects.
  • Analyze designs for efficiency of construction, use of materials, functionality, and practicality of design. 
  • Review, check and approve construction and shop drawings.
  • Monitor changes and revisions to designs and assess the impact on cost and scheduling.
  • Plan and oversee various construction efforts.
  • Provide technical assistance to site during construction phase.
  • Conduct occasional site inspections and visits to ensure design intent is met and ensure that all rules, regulations, and guidelines are explicitly followed.
  • Develop or alter standard project specifications to meet project specific design criteria. 
  • Monitor and guide design/drafting tasks and oversee the internal checking required on all project drawings.
  • Assure the technical quality of work performed by subordinates based upon organizational standards, codes and general knowledge of engineering principles and projects.
  • Organize, plans, and coordinate own work as well as the resources assigned on a specific project.
  • Responsible to seal all drawings that have been prepared under their direction as required in jurisdiction where professional designation is recognized. 
  • Interfacing with Mechanical, Process, Material Handling, Civil, Architectural, Electrical and Instrumentation disciplines. 
  • Operating within the company's quality system and safety policy in all phases of assignments.
  • Coordinate and work with project team members in Canada and other Wood execution offices across the globe.
  • Provide input for the technical proposal development effort on behalf of the structural engineering team. 
  • Coach and mentor less experience engineers and designers.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with the Canadian National Building Codes, and standards for concrete, steel, and wood structure design.
  • Foster and maintain strong relationships with clients and vendors to support project success.

  • Registered professional engineer in Canada 
  • 10+ years of experience in the Power Utility, Mining / Industrial and / or Renewable Energy sectors considered an asset
  • Site Experience
  • Experience developing proposals for various phases of capital projects
  • Experience developing capital cost estimates for various phases of capital projects
  • Ability to work efficiently and demonstrate effective organizational skills
  • In-depth knowledge of STAAD Pro structural analysis
  • Experience with Mathcad or Excel, Navis Works, AutoCAD, MS Office
  • Solid knowledge of National Building Codes, CSA Standards and local building codes and regulations primarily for Eastern Canada provinces
  • Attention to detail and pride in work quality
  • Excellent verbal, written communication skills
  • Strong client focus
  • A self-starter with experience leading multiple designers and engineering on schedule and cost driven capital projects
