Description

 

The Department of Occupational and Environmental Health (OEH) is searching for a candidate to fill this 75% position to develop novel content, such as webpages, videos, social media posts, blogs, or other outreach materials, to communicate information about extreme weather and its impacts on the Midwest Region. This position supports Central Midwest COLEARN, a NOAA CAP/RISA team, which is a multidisciplinary group working on community-engaged approaches to extreme-weather resilience with landowners and tribal communities in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri. 

This position is eligible for a hybrid/remote work arrangement. Options will be discussed during the hiring process.

Responsibilities:

  • Message Development and Implementation
  • Develop, maintain, and carry out comprehensive communications plan for overall project. 
  • Manage and update project website and social media presence. 

Develop multi-media materials highlighting team success and impact stories, summarizing community grant projects via one-page documents, short videos, story maps, etc, and contributing to reporting. Edit/format slide show presentations to add visual interest and make more accessible to an audience. Edit articles, reports, and brochures for publication and distribution.

Public Relations:

Support team outreach efforts by attending events and identifying and developing community partnerships. 

Assist with the logistics of events hosted.

Information Management:

Assist with translation of weather-related data and findings into lay language summaries for various audiences (e.g., rural communities, landowners, farmers, tribal nations).

Become familiar and conversant in the protocols and best practices for the various software, programs, and equipment used for projects such as webinars or online trainings.

Strategic Planning:

Support center activities, including online training, events and meetings, as well as in-person events.

Financial Responsibility:

Leadership/Supervision:

Functional supervision over assigned undergraduate/ graduate students, or volunteers is possible.

 

Qualifications

 

Qualifications:

Education or Equivalency Required: Bachelor’s degree in marketing/communication, journalism, science or environmental communication, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualification:

6 months – 1 year of experience developing multi-media communication products (e.g., video, audio, story maps, documents). 

Experience with website design/maintenance. 

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Ability to work flexible hours including occasional evenings. 

Ability to travel with some overnight travel; must hold a valid driver's license and meet the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standards

Desirable Qualification:

Master’s degree in science communication or related field.

Experience with science communication or research translation.

Position And Application Details:

This 75% position is eligible for hybird work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location
