Title: Assistant Director of Facility Management
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: Under direction, assists the Director and provides overall direction and management in the areas of repairs, maintenance, in-house capital projects, and the work order system. Oversees the internal administrative support services within the Department of Facility Management. Performs related duties as required.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities:
- Supervises maintenance, in-house capital improvement projects, and general administrative services, including the work of subordinate staff.
- Supervises and coordinates the work of skilled trades employees and contractors on repair, maintenance, and capital projects.
- Establishes budget estimates and standards to plan, monitor and document repair and maintenance work as well as in-house capital programs and projects.
- Supports the Director and Deputy Director in the development of operating programs, assisting in the management of departmental budgets, and ensuring that day-to-day business runs smoothly.
- Oversees the operations of the internal administrative support services.
- Functions as liaison with other departments to resolve administrative support problems, improve services, and develop cost efficiencies.
- Keeps the Director and Deputy Director abreast of general operations and new developments. Participates in budget preparation and management.
- Completes special projects as assigned by the Director or Deputy Director.
Minimum Qualifications:
Training And Experience:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Operations, Engineering, Construction Management, Facility Management, Public Administration; or a related field, plus five years of progressively responsible experience in facility operations or capital project management, preferably in a public sector agency. At least one year of supervisory experience coordinating skilled trades employees and contractors is required.
- A Master’s Degree in one of the above fields may substitute for two years of the required experience.
- In the absence of a Bachelor’s Degree, candidates may qualify with seven years of progressively responsible experience in facility operations or capital project management, including at least two years of supervisory experience coordinating skilled trades employees and contractors.

- Ability to identify problems and formulate practical, workable solutions.
- Ability to effectively manage diverse functions.
- Ability to supervise and direct professional and paraprofessional subordinate staff.

Physical Demands And Work Environment:
This job requires the employee to frequently sit and talk. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stand and talk. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Work is generally performed primarily in an office setting, in a smoke-free environment, with controlled temperature and lighting. Travel to citywide Park District facilities, events, and meetings may be required.
