The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) strives to create a cancer-free world, one person, one discovery at a time through research that translates to innovative and highly targeted patient care. The OSUCCC is committed to enhancing the quality of care provided to patients and families. The Clinical Genetics Program Assistant will provide support to multiple physicians and genetics counselors located at The James at the Martha Morehouse Tower Clinic and associated clinics by offering access to genetic testing services to colorectal cancer patients.
Position Summary
The position will work directly with physicians and genetic counselors and be responsible for identifying eligible patients, introducing the concept of cancer genetic services, facilitating education and consent for testing, assisting in ordering tests, and overseeing and organizing results and referrals when indicated. This position provides the following services: screen the clinic schedules of surgical and/or oncology providers to identify eligible colorectal cancer patients; contact/meet with patient to discuss services being offered; obtain informed consent if patient is interested; place test orders and upload insurance information and required medical documentation; communicate with the lab and patient about billing or sample issues; obtain or oversee attainment of samples; track sample results; communicate with physician teams of any patient with positive results and other patients who may need additional follow-up; place referrals for genetic counseling when appropriate; upload results to electronic medical record and clinical database registry; and follow-up on reclassified variants of uncertain significance. This person will also offer enrollment and consent of patients into Hereditary Gastrointestinal Cancer Registry for prospective follow-up/inclusion in future research, including data input.
Minimum Qualifications
For Hire:
High School diploma or GED. 0 years of relevant experience required. 0-2 years of relevant experience preferred. High School or GED required, with one year of relevant experience, research capacity and/or phlebotomy experience preferably; Bachelor’s Degree preferred; ability to perform basic laboratory procedures to process biological specimens; computer skills required with knowledge of database software applications desired, and strong written and verbal communication skills.
