Under general supervision, provides direct care to patients with physical disabilities and/or functional limitations in clinic, inpatient, outpatient and outreach programs.  Provides physical therapy evaluation, consultation and intervention services for assigned routine to complex patients, in accordance with Connecticut Children’s patient care delivery model and program policies and procedures.  Collaborates with patients, families, other health care team members and community resources to implement and coordinate a continuous plan of care, and to educate patients and families in appropriate physical therapy methods.  Participates in assigned staff development and research activities.  

Clinical Care:

  • Assessment - Conducts an effective clinical assessment for assigned patients, utilizing multiple sources/methods for data collection, and interprets data to create an individual plan of care.
  • Treatment Planning - Develops intervention/treatment plans, including specific goals and a variety of direct and consultative intervention approaches, while maximizing available resources within both hospital and community networks.
  • Treatment Implementation - Partners with the patient, family and health care team members to define and implement physical therapy interventions that support identified needs relative to prevention of delays, promotion of independence, remediation for loss of function and compensation for deficits.  Provides education to patient and families, monitors response to treatment plan and revises accordingly. Seeks assistance as needed.  
  • Population Specific – Demonstrates knowledge of the differences and needs of patient specific populations from infancy through early adulthood and applies them to practice.  Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families.

DOCUMENTATION:  Completes required clinical documentation in an organized and timely manner, in accordance with all department standards.

ADMINISTRATIVE:  Maintains expected patient care productivity per department standard 
STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND RESEARCH:  May provide support, guidance and mentoring to less experienced staff members.  May act as a clinical instructor for students after one year of practice as a pediatric Physical Therapist.  Actively engages in literature reviews as related to patient caseload.  Participates in weekly staff meetings and case reviews.  As assigned, participates in research activities.

OTHER:  Required to work occasional weekends and holidays.  
 

Education And/Or Experience Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited program in Physical Therapy required.  Doctoral Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in pediatric therapy strongly preferred.

License And/Or Certification Required:

  • Current State of Connecticut Physical Therapist License required or Temporary State of Connecticut License with the oversight of Licensed Physical Therapist.  If hired with Temporary License, must attain Permanent License within 120 days of hire.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/ CPR in adult, child and infant within first six months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

Knowledge Of:

  • Anatomy, physiology and kinesiology.
  • Physical therapy theory and practice.
  • Physical therapy services, and the operation and maintenance of physical therapy facilities and equipment.Administration.

Skills:

  • Beginning to intermediate skill in Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent Time Management, Organizational and Communication Skills.
  • Bilingual preferred.

Ability To:

  • Perform standardized clinical assessments in conjunction with clinical observations and family/medical reports to determine individual patient needs.
  • Perform a range of physical therapy techniques for patients including but not limited to Neuro-developmental Therapy, Manual Therapies and Modalities.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Travel between specialty care locations.
  • Instruct patients/families in physical therapy methods and the use of facilities and equipment.
  • Use independent judgment. 
  • Ensure confidentiality of patient information.
