Staff Engineer, Electromechanical Design
Position Overview:
As a Staff Engineer, Electromechanical Design, you are responsible for applying your technical expertise to shape and execute test strategies, lead system test development, and implement advanced manufacturing solutions. You will take ownership of medium- to high-complexity projects, aligning test systems with strategic business goals. Your work will drive innovation, support new technology adoption, and promote Design for Excellence (DfX) principles throughout the product development lifecycle. This position requires international travel 30-40% of the time for close interactions with product development and process development teams.
This position is part of the CMC&T Medical Devices & Combination Products (MDCP) cluster within our Device Automation Capabilities team. The Device Automation Team is responsible for developing and managing automated assembly, testing, and packaging solutions for medical devices, ensuring regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and robust lifecycle support. The team plays a critical role in new product introduction, life cycle engineering changes, and delivers technical leadership for complex automation projects in collaboration with trusted partners.
Your Tasks And Responsibilities:
- Innovate: Develop and implement system test solutions for complex electromechanical assemblies and combination products; stay ahead of emerging technologies and methodologies to enhance our manufacturing capabilities;
- Lead: Review and analyze system specifications; spearhead the development of next-generation test equipment fixtures and processes, identifying opportunities and risks to ensure the successful launch of medical devices;
- Collaborate: Work closely with cross-functional teams, external partners, and manufacturing sites to deliver projects on time and within budget, minimizing disruptions;
- Educate: Mentor junior engineers and promote DfX initiatives to foster a culture of excellence in product development;
- Execute: Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards; execute test cases (manual or automated), analyze results, and document test reports.
- The primary location for this role is Pittsburgh/O'Hara, PA. 30-40% international travel will be required with this role.
Who You Are:
Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Minimum of 5 years in the medical device sector (or other heavily regulated industry), with hands-on involvement in systems, test processes, and methods across multiple specialties including process manufacturing, electromechanical engineering, and Design for Excellence (DfX) (or disciplines related to DfX);
- Experience in defining requirements specification and design details for test systems of medical devices in a manufacturing environment;
- Knowledge of best practices in software development lifecycle with proven ability in multiple languages (e.g., C, Java, or C#);
- Familiarity with MCAD and ECAD tools;
- Proficient in statistical analysis and the use of statistical tools to interpret data, identify trends, and implement solutions that enhance accuracy and efficiency in systems testing;
- Proven track record of leading and mentoring teams, either in peer-to-peer settings or as a direct manager;
- At least 5 years of experience managing end-to-end (E2E) projects of medium to high complexity, particularly in new product development and design control environments;
- Strong technical foundation with the ability to apply pragmatic and creative problem-solving methods in dynamic and fast-paced environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience developing dashboards in an informatics tool such as Power BI or Tableau.

Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $116,322 to $174,483. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc.
