News Intern - Centre Daily Times

We cover Penn State University and the many issues that come with living in a college town, but our coverage expands to all of Centre County, including its rural communities, which have a unique set of issues. It makes the CDT an exciting place to be a reporter, and our interns have the opportunity to tell a wide range of stories, spotlight problems, and highlight solutions that truly make a difference.

At the CDT, we put a premium on breaking stories first as well as investing in hard-nosed, accountability journalism that our audience can’t get anywhere else. We are part of McClatchy, a digitally driven company focused on innovation, with newsrooms in 30 communities in the United States.

In the last two years, our team has exposed transparency concerns and open meeting law violations in local municipalities, answered questions about state prison closures, examined impacts of Penn State budget cuts, and more.

We are located in central Pennsylvania, about 3.5 hours from Philadelphia and 2.5 hours from Pittsburgh. Our community has a thriving arts scene, unique restaurants, and many opportunities for outdoor recreation. Summer is an especially fun time to be in the area, with a full slate of events including State College Pride and the nationally-known Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts.

In this role, you will need to: 

• Focus on stories that build readership
• Think about the audience first and always, with a commitment to tactics that grow readership.
• Master engaging multimedia storytelling
• Demonstrate speed, competitiveness, and SEO savvy through aggregating and storytelling tools
• Work well in a team environment.

Requirements:

• Strong writing skills, excellent news judgment, and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers.
• Unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism.
• Ability to build source networks and bring a constant flow of story ideas.
• Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories.
• Enthusiasm for learning new skills and technologies, such as AI
• Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced, and constantly evolving.
• Must have reliable transportation. Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance required (at least minimum insurance required for the state in which the employee works).
• Must be a college student or recent graduate.
