Penguin Press is seeking an Associate Editor, both to support the President & Publisher of the imprint in conjunction with an Editorial Assistant, and to acquire and edit books of their own. Penguin Press is home to a distinguished list of narrative nonfiction, history, politics, journalism, and literary fiction. The imprint’s award-winning and New York Times bestselling authors include Michael Pollan, Zadie Smith, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Celeste Ng, Ocean Vuong, Ron Chernow, Steve Coll, Elif Batuman, Ottessa Moshfegh, Jonathan Haidt, and Mary Oliver among others.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Provides support through all phases of the publishing process for approximately 10 books a year.
  • Acquires, edits, and oversees publication of their own list of nonfiction and select fiction titles appropriate to the Penguin Press list.
  • Communicates with authors and agents in all phases of the publishing process, from acquisition to publishing and beyond.
  • Develops strong working relationships with Managing Editorial, Production, and other essential in-house departments.
  • Works with supervisors, authors, and agents on the progress of book projects from acquisition to publication, including guiding authors through the manuscript production schedule.
  • Prepares paperwork, including contract requests, manuscript transmittals, profit and loss statements, and permissions requests.

Please apply if you meet the following qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant editorial experience in trade book publishing
  • Strong interest in and aptitude for serious nonfiction with a focus on history, politics, economics, current events, science and technology, and elevated self-help. 
  • A burgeoning network of agent, author, and wider cultural contacts
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with a keen eye for detail 
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with authors, agents, and colleagues
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with editorial software and tools 

The salary for this position is $66,500. All positions are currently eligible for an annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.   

This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA).
