Job Description
The Environmental & Lab Technician performs sampling, extraction, analysis, monitoring, auditing, and reporting duties to support the EHS department to achieve their goals and objectives and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
Main Responsibilities:
- Performing sample collection, preparation, extraction, and analysis according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and permitting requirements while achieving integrity of the results and target KPIs.
- Maintaining workspace, equipment, instrumentation, and incoming/outgoing sample inventory.
- Developing and enhancing effective troubleshooting skills and completing regular instrument maintenance and calibration procedures to enhance equipment reliability, efficiency, and accuracy.
- Becoming efficient in the performance of testing, analysis, and reporting within the department which maintains a broad scope of analytical capabilities.
- Performing method development and validation.
- Training new team members.
- Operating the Environmental and Air Quality Monitoring Programs for the Swan Hills Treatment Centre (SHTC) on a day-to-day basis.
- Conducting environmental inspections involving field work.
- Preparing reports according to Operating Approvals for submission to regulatory agencies
- Supporting the team to achieve their goals and objectives and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). KPIs include safety, productivity, and quality of work performed.
This position operates within a COR, ISO 17025 certified, and OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 conforming plant environment and is expected to comply with all regulatory requirements. The facility operates on a 24/7 basis.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills And Experience:
- No related experience is required however preference is for 1 year’s related environmental experience and 1 to 2 years’ related experience in operating and maintaining laboratory analytical instruments.
- Preference for 2 to 3 years’ related experience.
- Previous experience within an industrial plant environment is a definite asset.
- Previous experience within a regulatory environment is a definite asset.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Diploma in Environmental, Biological or Chemical Technology or a combination of demonstrated similar work experience, aptitude, and specific skills training is a definite asset.
- Knowledge of the Operating Approval and other Acts and Regulations and the ability to interpret them is required / Some mechanical aptitude is needed to troubleshoot problems with samplers.
- Proficiency in data interpretation and report writing.
- Working knowledge of plant processes including Bailey, ICIS and Active Factory.
- Understanding of sampling procedures and practices.
- The ability to read and interpret environmental and operating guidelines is essential.
- Working knowledge of Laboratory preparation of environmental samples.
- Effective customer service attitude and commitment to providing exceptional customer service and quality results.
- Effective interpersonal and conflict management skills to facilitate working effectively with wide range and number of people, including peers and manager, employees, and other departments, divisions, and management within all levels of the organization.
- Effective time management, decision-making, and planning and organizing skills.
- Attentiveness to details and ability to manage a diverse workload within a fast-paced environment with changing multiple priorities and frequent interruptions.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision.
- Proven organizational, good housekeeping, and creative problem-solving skills.
- Computer competency in MS Office applications, LIMS and Windows operating environments.
- Theoretical and practical understanding of analytical chemistry. Ability to apply knowledge in the use, maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical equipment.
- Excellent and accurate record keeping.
- Understanding of all preparatory and analytical techniques used in applicable section.
- Knowledge of the QA/QC requirements for analysis/reporting of pertinent tests.
- Ability to take instructions for the performance of non-routine analysis.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.
- Ability to complete all conditions of employment including criminal record check, negative drug test, current and clean Class 5 driver’s license, pre-employment medical, and background check.
Hours Of Work:
The Environment and Laboratory Technician is a permanent position, and is able to participate in a Compressed Work Week Schedule thereby working five (5) days per week, approximately eight and a half (8.5) hours per day, Monday to Friday, with an earned day off every second two-week pay period. Daily hours, which include a 30-minute unpaid lunch break, are 6:30 am to 3:30 pm. To ensure operational requirements and coverage is always achieved, incumbent may be requested to occasionally change/adapt their hours. With prior approval, Incumbent has flexibility to adapt hours to meet personal needs. Position is based on a 40-hour work week.
