The Manh Choh Project is a greenfield gold deposit in eastern Alaska being developed with ore being hauled to Kinross’ Fort Knox mine north of Fairbanks for processing. The mine site is located in the Tetlin Hills, approximately 250 miles southeast of Fort Knox and 10 miles southeast of Tok. Production is expected to begin in 2024.
Job Summary
This position is responsible for ensuring fire prevention systems are compliant and operational by verifying inspections and certifications, and reviewing the performance of equipment like alarms, sprinklers, extinguishers, suppression systems, and emergency lighting. The Fire Protection Officer (FPO) also collaborates with site management and health and safety personnel to maintain fire safety compliance according to local, state, and federal regulations. Responsible for developing, reviewing, and updating company policies, procedures and permits related to fire safety including evacuation planning, fire drills and tabletop exercises. while continuously aligning daily functions to reflect Kinross’ values.
Essential Functions
- Perform routine inspections and tests of the fire protection systems. This includes but is not limited to automatic sprinkler systems, standpipe and hose systems, fire pumps, portable and fixed fire extinguishers, gas based and foam suppression systems, fire alarms and emergency and exit lighting.
- Prepares system testing reports to verify proper operation and detect malfunctions.
- Ensures annual, monthly certification of fire extinguishing and suppression systems.
- Participates in major safety audits.
- Recommends systems for new buildings or infrastructure additions.
- Maintains compliance with NFPA standards, local fire codes, and manufacturer's recommendations.
- Creates detailed monthly records of all inspections, tests, and maintenance.
- Submits reports to safety officers, facility management, or local authorities having jurisdiction.
- Tracks inspection schedule and issues reminders for re-inspections or maintenance.
- Verifies that fire protection systems are installed, configured, certified and maintained according to applicable code.
- Performs hydrostatic testing, pressure testing and functional checks as required.
- Identifies and documents code violations or hazards and recommends corrective action or system upgrades as necessary.
- Liaises with facility management, safety officers, business partners and fire departments as needed.
- Oversees and verifies corrective work performed by vendors on in-house technicians.
- Re-inspects systems after corrective work or system modifications.
- Facilitates fire drills and provides technical support on system performance.
- Consistently exercise discretion and judgment in job performance.
Education And Experience
- Degree or diploma in fire science, fire protection engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- Professional certifications such as a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) or equivalent are preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in fire prevention, fire safety, risk identification and reduction methodology or a related field is required.
- In-depth knowledge of fire safety regulations, codes and standards is required.
- Strong analytical, problem solving, communication and facilitation skills needed.
- Basic knowledge of local fire safety legislation and building fire systems in the jurisdiction where the FPO is based.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
- Ability to identify and analyze fire risks and implement preventive strategies.
- Capable of writing technical reports and policy documents.
- Available during working hours and, if needed, to attend meetings regardless of the day of the week, if there is an emergency.
- Must be 18 years old and presently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
- Requires valid driver’s license.
