Full Time

Do you want to help shape the future of ING’s Order Management & Financial Messaging capabilities? Are you eager to design globally scalable, resilient, and secure services that enable ING to stay at the forefront of payments? Then join ING’s Payment & Settlement Services (PSS) as an Architect with focus on Order Management & Financial Messaging.

Payment & Settlement Services

Our vision is to design, build and operate high quality and efficient payment services, that are easy to consume and enable our internal and external customers to stay at the forefront of the industry. Our mission is to become a professional service provider with focus on delivering quality and efficiency, leveraging our world-class scalable solutions and the expertise of our people.

The Team

Within Payment & Settlement Services Architecture we are looking for a new Architect. You will be joining a diverse and experienced team of 30+ architects of different backgrounds and nationalities, working closely with both Business and Technology colleagues to realise our global ambitions. The team is distributed across Belgium, the Netherlands, Romania and the Philippines. You will be based in Amsterdam and support ING’s international services. This position will have its focus on Order Management and Financial Messaging, while also contributing cross-domain in the broader Payments & Settlement area.

Roles And Responsibilities

As An Architect, You Will:

  • Define and drive the strategic architecture vision and roadmaps for Order Management and Financial Messaging, aligned with ING’s global payments strategy.
  • Create and maintain reference architectures, principles, and standards that guide solution and domain architects across PSS.
  • Provide strategic guidance on the evolution of Order Management & Financial Messaging (ISO 20022 migration, Swift connectivity, resiliency, security).
  • Influence and align business and technology strategy across multiple domains.
  • Act as architectural lead on key programs, ensuring alignment with target state architecture and long-term vision.
  • Partner with business product owners, senior stakeholders, CTOs/CIOs, as well as domain and solution architects.
  • Support teams by simplifying complexity and ensuring designs are scalable, resilient, and regulatory compliant.
  • Be willing to dive into detail and explore technical options when needed, while leveraging engineers and specialists for deep expertise.
  • Represent ING in external industry working groups (e.g., Swift, ISO 20022) where relevant.

How To Succeed

We hire smart people like you for your potential. Our biggest expectation is that you’ll stay curious, keep learning, and take ownership. In return, we’ll support you in growing as a professional and making a real impact.

You will succeed in this role if you are:

  • team player who thrives in a diverse, international environment.
  • Able to simplify complexity and communicate clearly across all levels — from engineers to architects to C-level executives.
  • Capable of mentoring and guiding domain architects, solution architects, engineers, and business colleagues (though not a formal people manager).
  • Visionary and strategic, while remaining practical and outcome-driven.
  • Comfortable working in highly regulated financial environments, aligning architecture with compliance, resilience, and security requirements.
  • Someone who can think big picture but also roll up sleeves when necessary to ensure proposals are practical and realisable.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of relevant experience, with a proven track record as an Architect in large, regulated environments (preferably financial institutions).
  • Strong knowledge of payments, financial messaging, and order management; direct Swift experience is a strong plus.
  • Proven experience with ISO 20022, resilience, and security.
  • Knowledge of event-driven architecture, APIs, and messaging platforms (Kafka, Pulsar) is strongly valued.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills; able to engage with both business and technology leaders.
  • ArchiMate certified, or willing to obtain certification before joining.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, business administration, or related field.
  • Familiarity with architecture frameworks (e.g., TOGAF) and agile delivery environments (certifications are a plus, not mandatory).
