Position Summary

The Network Engineer III is the subject matter expert responsible for the design, configuration, and management of large-scale enterprise, datacenter, manufacturing, and retail networks.

About The Team

This position will work within the Network Engineering team in Enterprise Technology Operations (ETO), collaborate with other engineering teams, Information Security, Project Management/Portfolio Management, facilities, and vendors to plan, design, implement and operate all network services.

Primary Qualifications

  • 10 or more years of hands-on experience with firewall design/configuration, client-based VPN solutions such as Global Protect from Palo Alto, routing, switching, wireless and WAN technologies.
  • Advanced understanding of the OSI model, subnetting, troubleshooting various networking issues and protocols with knowledge of tools such as IP scanners and packet capture & analysis.
  • Advanced understanding of 802.1q VLANs, VXLAN, spanning tree, dynamic routing w/ OSPF and/or BGP
  • Ability to make recommendations for network architecture improvements, focusing on reducing complexity, eliminating tech debt, improving efficiency, and simplifying lifecycle management.
  • Advanced understanding of authentication protocols, including Network Access Control. 
  • Ability to monitor network utilization, anticipate capacity problems and recommend solutions. Develop and evaluate network performance criteria and measurement methods.
  • Excellent documentation and knowledge transfer skills. Ability to understand, create and explain network diagrams, topologies, and concepts. Ability to create operational documentation that focuses on business outcomes and not simply systems alerts or uptime metrics.
  • Willingness to mentor more junior engineers.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and the ability to interact with a diverse group of team members at all technical levels.
  • Ability to quickly learn new or unfamiliar technologies and products, independently using documentation and online resources.
  • Drives innovation and creative solutions that deliver business results while meeting IT operational guidelines.  Ability to leverage scripting with Ansible and Python a plus. Advanced troubleshooting skills, while also documenting steps taken as issue occur.
  • Advanced knowledge of cloud networking, and a minimum of 5 years working with Terraform in Azure preferred.
  • Remain current on emerging technologies via professional groups, trade magazines, internal and external training, independent research and study, and other avenues available.
  • Ability to translate stakeholder requirements into technical specifications that can be used for development and break down technical complexities so that they can be easily understood by business units and end users.

Desired Skills

  • CCNP and/or PCNSE certification or equivalent experience and skillsets preferred.
  • Previous experience includes ITIL frameworks, including the change management processes, problem management and incident management workflows.
  • Sense of urgency when action is required, and a sense of ownership on scope of IT responsibilities.
  • Azure Solution Architect or a Cloud based certification focused on Cloud Networking preferred.
  • Firm understanding of network access control technologies, preferably Cisco ISE.
  • Firm understanding of Software defined networking, preferably Cisco Nexus and SD-WAN.
  • Advanced knowledge of SD-WAN; specifically Cisco Meraki technologies
  • Prepares analysis of the short-term or long-term capacity needs for switching, routing, wireless and firewalls.
  • Can independently develop network architecture design, feasibility and cost studies.
  • Makes decisions regarding own work methods, occasionally in ambiguous situations, and requires minimal direction and receives guidance where needed.
  • Must be passionate about contributing to an organization focused on continuously improving team member and customer experiences
  • Ability to perform network performance and packet capture analysis
  • Hands-on experience configuring and maintaining NGFW, IPSec VPN and client-based VPN portals and gateways.
  • Experience in JIRA and Agile Methodology preferred, but not required
