Job Summary:

Jefferson County Department of Health is seeking to hire a Guard to provide security services by patrolling and regulating the use of public property to ensure that misuse, damage, or theft does not occur. Guards receive specific assignments and consult with the supervisor as needed on all matters not specifically covered in the original instructions. Work assignments are routine and normally reviewed for completeness and accuracy, or involve tasks that provide inherent checks built into the nature of the work. Changes in assignments are received orally or in writing. Guards must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Work is reviewed through reports, observation, and results obtained.

Health Department $14.65 - $22.72

Minimum Qualifications:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • Driver'S License.

  • Experience working with the public providing customer service (e.g., answering questions, sales, providing directions).
  • Willingness to stand and/or walk for an extended period of time during a shift.
  • Willingness to work odd hours and shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Jefferson County Department of Health. These qualifications may be considered by the hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

  • One year of experience working in security (e.g., guard, businesses, military, police, jail, detention centers, correctional facilities).
  • Experience working in maintenance field making repairs and communicating with customers (e.g., building, commercial, residential).
  • Experience creating documentation for the purpose of reporting or recording incidents (e.g., writing reports to document incidents/events).
  • Experience working with computerized security systems (e.g., secured access, card, cameras, alarms, closed-circuit television).
  • Experience scanning persons with security equipment (e.g., walk through scanners, security wand/metal detector, x-ray machine).

Typical Job Duties:

  • Opens and/or closes building by unlocking/locking doors, inspecting entrances and exits, and monitoring/setting alarms to provide access and ensure the safety of the building.
  • Provides customer service, internally and/or externally, via phone, email or face to face interaction.
  • Contacts the appropriate emergency assistance personnel or supervisor to report suspicious or dangerous situations, safety hazards, violations of rules, unauthorized personnel, emergencies, etc., so incidents are appropriately addressed.
  • Assists in maintaining the facility by inspecting the buildings and grounds for damage (e.g., signs of intrusion, unauthorized personnel, maintenance problems) to enforce security, ensure that rules and regulations are consistently followed and the environment is safe.
  • Screens employees and visitors by operating metal detectors, collecting prohibited items, and tracking visitors to ensure the security of the building and all of its occupants.
  • Maintains security of the premises through patrol, intervention, and performing security duties to ensure safety of individuals within and around premises.

Physical Demands:

Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Job may require applying self-defense and restraint tactics to defend oneself from physical attack.

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily in and around employer-owned facilities such as office buildings, warehouses, public works facilities, etc. Work involves the use of standard office equipment, as well as the use of equipment typically used in security operations. May be required to occasionally deal with physically aggressive or violent individuals, and may be exposed to potential and real physical violence. Employees in this class may also be required to work nights and weekends.
