Job Description
Join Allstate’s in-house legal team, Claim Litigation, a division of Global Litigation. Claim Litigation provides strategic legal counsel to the Company’s Claims Organization on claims handling practices and matters involving potential or threatened extra-contractual exposure to the Company. These claims often carry significant financial and reputational risk, requiring deep litigation expertise, strategic oversight, and a strong understanding of claims handling practices.We are seeking a Managing Counsel to oversee first-party litigation against the Company arising from the handling of homeowners and property insurance claims. This includes oversight of lawsuits brought by insureds for breach of contract, bad faith, and other complex insurance-related allegations. The role will collaborate closely with outside counsel and internal Claims personnel to develop strategic resolution and litigation strategies, including assisting with discovery, witness preparation, and settlement recommendations.
The ideal candidate will have solid and relative experience in a law firm or in-house legal department related to first-party property claims, and some experience managing or litigating bad faith or extra-contractual matters. In addition, the successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong judgment, strong research and writing skills, and an eagerness to be involved in a dynamic company.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee litigation involving first-party property claims with extra-contractual risk and bad faith allegations, and other complex claims handling issues.
- Conduct legal analysis of extra-contractual issues and provide strategic advice and counsel to Claims.
- Advise Claims on bad faith and extra-contractual risks, resolution strategies, and risk mitigation.
- Prepare and present recommendations for settlement of claims involving bad faith and extra-contractual exposure.
- Collaborate with outside counsel and internal stakeholders to manage litigation.
- Partner with business colleagues and other in-house legal teams to develop and implement claims handling strategies.
- Provide legal guidance on emerging litigation risks and trends.
Education
- Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Active bar membership in good standing in the state of practice.
Experience
- Minimum of 7 years of substantive legal experience in a law firm or in-house legal department.
- Strong background in first-party property insurance matters.
- Managing or litigating bad faith and extra-contractual claims.
Functional Skills
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Ability to interact effectively across all levels of the organization.
- Experience supervising or mentoring junior legal professionals.
- Proficiency in legal research tools (e.g., LexisNexis) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Insurance defense experience required.

Compensation offered for this role is $104, 000.00 - $180, 000.00 annually and is based on experience and qualifications.The candidate(s) offered this position will be required to submit to a background investigation.
