Position Summary
Performs highly advanced (senior-level) informational and communications work involving the collection of information to develop, create, and produce content and materials for release to various communications media (broadcast, print, digital, and/or social media) and for use by the agency, the general public, and other government agencies. Drafts and executes content across traditional and digital media channels, press releases, media statements, and other content to execute the agency’s strategic plans. Works under the minimal direction of the Director of Public Affairs with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.
- Writes technical and non-technical documents including reports, executive briefings, press releases, presentations, templates, flowcharts, plans, white papers, and user guides.
- Edits internal and external agency documents and communications including: presentations, executive briefings, email notifications and distributions, security bulletins, website content, and policies for the agency.
- Ensures consistent, clear, and complete communications for written and reviewed agency documents through a comprehensive style guide.
- Prepares talking points, speeches, one-pagers, bill and legislative overviews, letters, presentations, email notifications, and other documents for the Agency Head.
- Assists agency divisions with communications messaging
- Formats documents, and creates templates, and other documents that ensure consistency among presentations.
- Responds to media inquiries. Prepares talking points and interview preparation. Drafts and distributes press releases. Develops and maintains media contact lists. Handles media calls. Creates digital content and targeted media outreach.
Additional Duties
- Serves as backup to the Director of Public Affairs as needed, including attending external media interviews with agency staff, and responding to reporter requests for comment.
- Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in business administration, English, education, or a related field is generally preferred.
- Additional work-related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis (High-school diploma required.
Experience And Training Required
- Five (5) years of experience in technical writing; creating and editing documentation, documenting processes, creating public presentations and other written materials and communications using plain language techniques.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of the techniques and methods of planning, organizing, and writing various types of materials; of research methodology; and of departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Skill in writing technical and business documents.
- Demonstrated ability to work on concurrent tasks while effectively prioritizing and coordinating work assignments.
