Judge Heidi Schultz is seeking a motivated, self-driven, professional to serve as a judicial law clerk. Law Clerks work directly with the District Court Judge performing professional legal research, preparing memoranda, opinions, and orders, and performing related administrative work. This position provides support for the functions of a Judge to uphold the Court's mission of providing justice through a system that assures equal access for the fair and timely resolution of cases and controversies.

You’ll be able to use your legal research and writing skills, work as part of a judge team, and observe all types of court calendars and proceedings. Law Clerks have the opportunity to work on a variety of assignments and observe different types of court proceedings including criminal, civil, probate, family, juvenile, and conciliation cases. The primary work location will be a located in Stearns County, St. Cloud, MN. However, flexibility for remote and hybrid options may be available.

Example Of Duties:

The caseload involves all types of cases and issues. In addition to traditional duties of research and writing, you will be expected to interact with a variety of stakeholders and participants, manage conciliation court, and develop the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully participate in a court proceeding.

Typical Qualifications:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited law school.
  • Knowledge of general law, state law, established precedent, and sources of legal reference.
  • Knowledge of court practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology and concepts.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with a diverse group of people, including attorneys and pro se parties.
  • Ability to research complex legal problems or questions and apply legal principles.
  • Ability to represent the court in a respectful manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Judge, judicial team and others.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft products, including legal research software is preferred.
  • Law Clerks are at-will employees and the work is performed under the supervision of a District Court Judge.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office setting or a courtroom.

  • Current judicial branch employees must have satisfactory performance in all competencies in their most recent performance evaluation and no discipline above an oral reprimand in the preceding 6 months.
