Position Description
Transportation Engineer I:
Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, transportation materials, quality monitoring, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Transportation Engineer Ii:
Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, transportation materials, quality monitoring, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Transportation Engineer Iii:
Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, transportation materials, quality monitoring, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties:
Transportation Engineer I:
- Assists district and division personnel on material and/or fabrication requirements and advises of appropriate material and/or fabrication application and acceptability.
- Develops and/or reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans.
- Drive/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.
- Evaluates the performance of new transportation products.
- Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
- May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
- Monitors contractors' compliance with plans and specifications.
- Performs and/or documents in-house research studies.
- Reviews literature, technical data, material specifications and procedures.
- Writes reports, specifications and test procedures.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Engineer Ii Will Perform All The Above And The Following:
- Acts in an advisory capacity on administrative, technical, regulatory and engineering aspects of transportation.
- Oversees construction and audit records.
- Analyzes and assists in the resolution of contract problems and disputes.
- Investigates materials failures or fabrication problems; reviews test data and assists in determining cause of failing materials.
- Leads/Trains professional and administrative staff.
Transportation Engineer Iii Will Perform All The Above And The Following:
- Assesses and reports actual project progress versus planned progress to determine trends and variances for complex projects.
- Coordinates and/or monitors assigned projects/programs/plans
- Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and/or plan development.
- Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.
- Utilizes project management principles in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing for complex transportation projects.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

- Transportation Engineer II - 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
- Transportation Engineer III - 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
Licenses And Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Licensed Prof Engineer*
Important: Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment

- Considerable knowledge of construction engineering policies and procedures
- Negotiating settlement of differences without damaging relationships; applying effective questioning and listening techniques to determine other parties' positions in a direct and diplomatic manner
- Analyzing and organizing business and technical data
- Planning, assigning, directing, coordinating and reviewing the work of professional, administrative and technical employees
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions:
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
- Subject to noise
- Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
- Light work: Lift up to 20lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10lbs.
- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance /from one work site to another
- Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
- Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
- Close Visual Acuity- work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
- Close VIsual Acuity- work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts
- Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
