Mental Health Social worker 

£41,133 - £49,056 plus £3,000 market supplement

About The Role

Exciting opportunities have arisen within our newly transformed Mental Health Social Services in the London Borough of Newham (LBN) and we are looking to hire social workers. The candidate must have a minimum of two years’ experience, can be a practicing Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP’s) or be willing to train as an AMHP. We are looking for people who embrace change and are committed to help us shape our vision for Adult Mental Health Services, to focus on Recovery based, personalized and outcome focused approaches, in which our residents get an improved choice, greater control, and maximize their independence. 

Duties include carrying out social care needs and Carers assessments under the Care Act of 2014 both in the community and in hospital, completing support planning and reviews. You will undertake Social Circumstance Reports, attending Mental Health Review Tribunals and attending s117 after care meetings under the Mental Health Act1983 (2007). You will also be asked to act as an Enquiry Officer on Safeguarding cases and have a strong understanding of Mental Capacity Assessments and DoLS. If you are an AMHP you will be expected to contribute to the AMHP rota.

Mental Health Neighbourhood Team South – our long-term team, holding a case load of those who receive commissioned care and support services, undertaking reviews of people’s needs and supporting people from a recovery based approach to enhance a person’s independence and promote well-being.

About You

We are looking for a passionate and dedicated team member, who is happy to work autonomously in a busy and fast-paced team and has the ability to effectively prioritise. 

You will have undertaken statutory work as per the Care Act 2014 and Mental Capacity Act 2005, and have awareness of other pertinent legislation (Mental Health Act 1983 / 2007, Human Rights Act 1998, Equalities Act 2010). Strong assessments skills are a must, always using a person-centred and strengths based approach with the ability to think creatively outside the box.

An understanding of the social determinants of mental health issues are key along with the complexities that may go with it including drug and alcohol issues, forensics issues, anti-social behaviour, and housing issues. 

We are seeking a social worker with the ability to engage the most vulnerable and hard to serve residents within one of the most diverse and disadvantaged boroughs in Newham.

The London Borough of Newham is located only 5 miles east of London. It is well positioned with access to all major networks in London and the south east.  It is well connected  by public transport with, bus, tube and DLR. When the Crossrail service opens it will call at Custom House close to our council offices and also Stratford station and from there to central London. The London City Airport which serves major European cities is located at Royal Albert Dock. Newham has the youngest overall population in the country. It was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and contains most of the Olympic Park including the London Stadium. It has a thriving arts quarter with the Theatre Royal Stratford East offering excellent entertainment for all the family. There is the University of East London which has two campuses in Newham, one in Stratford and another next to the regenerated Royal Albert Dock. It also has a large Westfield shopping Centre in Stratford which has all the major retailers there.
