Job Purpose:

The Controls Technician supports plant operations by maintaining and troubleshooting automated control systems, including panel wiring, sensors, instrumentation, servo and vision systems, and motor/valve controls. This role involves diagnosing equipment issues using PLC logic and software tools, performing calibrations, assisting maintenance mechanics, and training others in the operation of equipment and control systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot and repair control system reliability issues (e.g., control panels/wiring, sensors, instrumentation, vision systems, vfds).
  • Diagnosing equipment issues utilizing PLC logic and software tools (e.g., Studio 5000, Connected Components).
  • Troubleshoot industrial communication networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, I/O Link, AS-i).
  • Execute preventive maintenance and calibrations associated with controls systems and instrumentation
  • Make modifications and updates to ladder logic to resolve issues.
  • Install and configure new I/O modules and VFDs.
  • Utilize CMMS system to maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, program changes, and system configurations.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and electrical codes (e.g., NFPA 70E).
  • Work closely with engineering and operations teams to support production goals.
  • Train operators and junior technicians on basic troubleshooting and safe operation of control systems.
  • Support maintenance mechanics as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills/Qualifications Required:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • An associate’s degree in electrical/electronic engineering technology or equivalent experience.
  • Strong skills in troubleshooting and root cause analysis of control system failures.
  • Experienced with PLC logic and programming, specifically Studio 5000; including advanced instructions, message routing, function block diagrams, and structured text.
  • Experience programming SCADA Systems (Factorytalk SE/ME).
  • Experience with a variety of industrial networking protocols (Modbus, Ethernet I/P, I/O Link, AS-i).
  • Experience with process control systems (valve and VFD controls)
  • Ability to read electrical prints.
  • Experience with mechanical machine repair or as an industrial electrician a plus.
  • Positive and engaged with strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Working Conditions And Physical Requirements:

  • Regular use of a variety of hand tools is essential. 
  • Hearing and vision within normal range.
  • Ability to sit/stand/walk for prolonged periods
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Reaching/bending/climbing required to service equipment.
  • Exposure to industrial hazards (plant utility systems)

Food Safety Requirements:

  • Notify supervision of any repairs or adjustments that are required that may affect product quality or food safety.
  • Understand, observe, and comply with the handling and usage of the color-coded container policy while in the Production Areas.
  • Perform all duties necessary to meet Company, Customer and/or Government requirements/standards as prioritized by the Company.
  • Ability to initiate action to prevent the occurrence of nonconformities relating to Food Safety and the Quality of the product, processes, quality system, or safety system.
  • Identify and record any problems relating to Food Safety and the Quality of the ingredients, processes, quality system, or safety system.
  • Control further processing or delivery of nonconforming product in terms of Food Safety and Quality issues until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected.
  • In the event of absence, another employee with the same skill level will assume the duties and responsibilities as required.
