Job Description
HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT
The System Design Engineer (SDE) analyzes the stakeholder's needs and expectations, achieving complete understanding of the system problem space, establishing the requirements for the system and ensuring that all requirements relevant for product development are clarified.
The SDE is also responsible for defining the architecture of the system / product. In cooperation with the discipline design engineers such as electrical, software, display technology and mechanical, the System Design Engineer ensures the system architecture is assigned / covered into the respective R&D disciplines designs/architectures.
The SDE covers an end-to-end responsibility of technical aspects (left side of V-cycle) in order to ensure that requirements of all life cycle stages are addressed with best choice solutions in terms of quality, delivery and costs. They will be responsible for independent development solutions to problems in vehicle architecture as well as creation of competitive technical product concepts which are part of our Head up displays and drive those solutions into production.
Main Project Tasks – 70% of workload:
The System Design Engineer will be responsible for optical systems such as Heads Up Display (HUD), Scenic View (SV), Display Back lights and other similar type product for automotive applications.
Requirements Management:
- Choose re-use concept in terms of product type related needs (own system and discipline documents)
- Managing and participation in reviews to identify Requirements inconsistencies.
Requirements Development:
- Participate in the elicitation of the requirements.
- Participate in the analysis of the requirements (analyzing, categorizing, prioritizing).
- Identify functional requirements inconsistencies and clarify those directly with the stakeholder.
- Identify missing requirements and eliminate those in close cooperation with the stakeholder.
- Document the requirements in the Performance Specification. This includes requirement refinement if necessary.
- Ensure that the Performance Specification is in line with the customer needs.
- Organization and participation in the documentation of the requirements in the Performance Specification.
- Create the traceability from own documents to source.
- Create necessary data for reporting purposes out of all own Requirements documents.
- Take over PSM 1st draft. Refine and finalize the PSM with discipline specific requirements.
Product Architecture:
- Develop a technical concept for the product to be developed based on the customer and internal requirements, together with the discipline architects
- Ensures the technical feasibility of the solution incl. manufacturability in compliance with requirements and attainment of targets for costs, time schedule, risk and quality
- Ensures the compliance with legal and internal requirements (e.g. platform concept for embedded controller, standard components or similar) and Customer Standards
- Coordinates the interfaces between SW-, EE- and ME-development, focusing on potential conflicts and cross-discipline impacts between the individual solutions
- Files the system architecture-related documents in the configuration management system
- Ensures the availability of a D-FMEA Facilitator and a clear understanding of his responsibilities in the project
- Identifies, analyses and documents special characteristics
Required Skills
Technical Skills:
- Process experience on Change-, Version- and Requirements Management (CMMI, SPICE)
- Tool know how for Change-, Version- and Requirements Management
- Good understanding of Systems Engineering.
- Optical System design and simulation experience using tools similar to SPEOS, Zemax,….
- Excellent know how in discipline specific technologies, such as HUD and Sterioscopic.
- In-depth experience with the product portfolio (HUD, Scenic View, Display Back Light,etc).
- Able to lead a team thru the quotation process for HUD or similar product acting as the technical lead.
- Good knowledge of the product components (electrical engineering, software, mechanical engineering)
- Knowledge of development (all disciplines), test, integration and production (sample and final product) processes
- Coordinates the interfaces between SW-, EE- and ME-development, focusing on potential conflicts and cross-discipline impacts between the individual solutions
- Work with cross-functional (SW, HW, system, production, optics, quality, test and validation, FEA, etc.) teams to achieve desired product performance

Qualifications
Experience:
Experience required in the design and development of optical systems, such as HUD and display back lights and project work within a project team. Consider very experienced in his field of Optics and Mechanics. In addition, the candidate should be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Qualifications:
- The candidate for this position should have a bachelor’s degree in Optical or Mechanical Engineering or comparable, Masters or higher is preferred.
- At least 5 years of experience in optical systems design.
- Capable of detecting or recognizing problems and identify possible solutions.
- Automotive product development experience.
- Highly Motivated, Creative, Results Oriented, Quality Oriented, Able to make Decisions.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and ability to work across multiple disciplines. (Optics Designers, Electronics, Systems)
- Experience required in the design and development of optical systems.
- Consider very experienced in his field.
- The candidate should be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Able to work in a team
- Excellent verbal/written communication skills and organizational and time management.
- Proficient in English.
- Customer presentations and leading technical discussions.
Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. AUMOVIO will offer visa support.
