Day (United States of America)The Executive Director is primarily responsible for coordinating strategy and the day-to-day operations of the three participating hospitals at the Cancer Center, reporting to the Cancer Center Coordinating Committee, comprised of a senior representative of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), Brigham & Women’s Hospital (BWH), and South Shore Hospital (SSH) leadership. Serves as key member, facilitator, and leader of the various interdisciplinary work groups and committees that deal with the complex issues surrounding technology, clinical affiliations, information systems, human resources, marketing and public relations, real estate and facilities, facility design, operations, infection control, biomedical engineering, and security.Secondarily, the position is responsible for the efficient operations of the Cancer Care Service Line and its components at South Shore Hospital, reporting to a SSH Clinical Services VP, working closely with SSH's COO, CMO and CFO, DFCI VP of Network Operations and BWH Executive Director of Cancer Services and collaborating with the respective service line Chiefs and nursing leadership to ensure successful completion of the Cancer Care Service Line deliverables.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develops and fosters effective collaboration among clinical departments and medical staff leadership within the Cancer Center to ensure an integrated approach to providing services.
- Serves as the coordinating force that aligns the Cancer Center’s clinical, financial, and human resources to achieve performance objectives, drive volume growth, and ensure delivery within budget. Collaborates with partner institutions on strategic projections, budgeting, and financial analysis.
- Collaborates closely with Operations Directors, Nurse Directors and Practice Managers across departments to ensure effective on-site operations, patient flow, and alignment with strategic goals. Maintains direct operational oversight for Breast and Multispecialty services.
- Coordinates efforts among clinical service providers to comply with all of the standards, policies and procedures, and regulatory, compliance, and licensure requirements of the licensee hospitals.
- Participates in strategic planning with Cancer Center clinical service providers; monitors long-range goals and objectives for all clinical services; monitors and evaluates operational effectiveness; recommends and advances changes required for operational improvement.
- Assesses, recommends, and takes steps to create and foster a cohesive working environment. Reports on administrative aspects of operations to senior hospital administration and the Cancer Center Coordinating Committee.
- As appropriate, represents the clinical service providers internally and externally to foster positive community relations and image, while promoting the Cancer Center as a community resource.
- Coordinates efforts amongst the clinical service providers to ensure the Cancer Center is a well-run, integrated multi-disciplinary provider of care that supports a positive patient experience, drives increased market share and financial returns, and promotes improved outcomes within the ambulatory environment.
- Works with the clinical service providers to establish performance measures and targets, including efficiency, patient experience, quality and safety as well as financial.
- Leads development of dashboards and analytics tools to inform executive decision-making.
- Uses clinical, operational, and financial data to evaluate programs, prioritize investments, and ensure alignment with strategic goals.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the service standards of the clinical service providers and serves as a role model and resource for customer service.
- Develops, monitors, and oversees systems and procedures to ensure timely response to patient experience concerns.
- Works with DFCI/BWH/SSH operations, nursing, finance, and information services to develop and support organizational processes and functions such as employee performance review, clinical service review, information management, infection control, and materials management.
- Identifies and leverages "best practice" principles together with clinical service providers.
- Keeps abreast of changes in the healthcare industry, organizational trends, and major technological improvements in medical practice.
- Works with the DFCI/BWH/SSH marketing departments to develop and implement marketing and communication plans.
- Directs all building operation functions including: hours of operation, way finding, access, parking, phones, IS systems, security, etc. Coordinate vendors, contractors and service personnel. Consults, advises, or collaborates with the clinical service providers on matters pertaining to policy guidelines, recruiting and operational planning.
- Continually monitors and promotes the work culture that will attract and retain the staff talent necessary to provide the highest quality of patient care possible. Serves as a professional role model; assists with the development of management staff.
- Acts as collaborative team leader with the development of volume projections, operating costs, and reports for each hospital service's budgeting and planning process. Assist hospitals with data monitoring, reporting and evaluation.
- Accountable for prudent financial management of shared resources.
- Serves as on-site resource to the licensee hospital CFOs for any requested financial data and analysis.
- Coordinates and supports the Cancer Committee, ensuring effective meeting facilitation, documentation, and alignment with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Leads the development and implementation of new programs in alignment with institutional strategy and community needs.
- Identifies opportunities for clinical program expansion and leads strategic space planning efforts. Assesses capacity constraints related to facilities and parking and collaborates with key stakeholders to develop and implement effective solutions.
- Ensures the Cancer Center is prepared for emergency situations, including pandemic response, supply chain disruptions, and business continuity planning.
- Collaborates with institutional risk and compliance teams to mitigate organizational risks.
- Technology and Learning. Participates in continued learning and possess a willingness and ability to learn and utilize new technology and procedures that continue to develop in their role and throughout the organization. Embraces technological advances that allow us to communicate information effectively and efficiently based on role.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:
- Lead role in business process improvement activity and system integration for ambulatory setting required.
- Lead roles in at least two ambulatory project implementations preferred.
- Must have full understanding of overall business processes and ambulatory operations.
- Knowledge of CMS, DPH, Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements regarding clinical licensure.
- Knowledge of computerized information systems.
- Must have well-developed analytical ability and database management skills.
- Knowledge of cost control principles and practices.
- Knowledge of developing, monitoring and submitting budget reports.
- Knowledge of fiscal operations, practices and analysis.
- Experience with business case preparation and cost benefit analysis.
- Ability to assess business processes and develop improvement plans to optimize efficiency, throughput, and quality of care.
- Strong project management skills including ability to prioritize, delegate, and manage multiple high-stakes initiatives simultaneously.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels and build consensus amongst diverse groups of stakeholders.
- Ability to lead and work effectively within a complex health system, navigating governance, operational decision-making, and change management.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and managing across clinical, administrative, and operational domains.
- Minimum Education - Preferred:
- Bachelor's and/or Masters Preferred
- Minimum Work Experience:
- 6-8 years of progressive experience in healthcare management, including an executive position in an ambulatory setting, preferably in Cancer Care.
