Purpose of the Position

The General Manager of Workplace Health and Safety is responsible for leading the development and performance of the Risk, Workplace Health & Safety and Compliance functions, positioning them as best-practice partners that support service delivery teams.

This role plays a key part in ensuring the long-term sustainability of CQID, with accountability for maintaining Risk and Compliance with industry standards, developing and managing WHS systems and policies and processes related to non-service delivery compliance - safeguarding both the organisation's reputation and operational performance.

Responsibilities And Duties

  • Lead, supervise and support direct reports, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to identify and implement best-practice corporate policies and procedures that enhance risk management and workplace health and safety outcomes.
  • Design, review, and enhance WHS systems, policies, and integrated reporting frameworks to ensure regulatory compliance, operational effectiveness, and strong support for service delivery functions.
  • Develop and execute strategies that foster a positive safety culture focused on compliance and performance, incorporating planning, implementation, monitoring, reporting, and evaluations processes.
  • Oversee the accurate reporting and documentation of workplace injuries and incidents, and lead the development and implementation of appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
  • Drive continuous improvement across quality and accreditation systems to maintain consistent, high levels of compliance organisation-wide.
  • Provide expert WHS advice, training, and support to operational teams and external service providers, ensuring alignment with organisational standards.
  • Support the implementation of the organisation's risk management policy and monitor risk reporting activities.
  • Manage the rollout and maintenance of the risk management framework, including responsibility for the Master Risk Register.
  • Serve as the organisation's WHS Officer and primary point of contact with regulatory bodies and authorities.
  • Prepare and present business reports related to risk, health, and safety, including monthly and quarterly performance reports.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant quality and safety standards and frameworks, such as HSQF, ISO 9001:2015, ChildSafe standards, and appliance WHS legislation.

Qualifications And Experience

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate capability in the following areas:

  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Heritage and connection to community and culture (non-Indigenous candidates will be considered if there are no suitable Indigenous candidates)
  • You hold relevant tertiary qualifications and a combination of relevant skills, knowledge and experience leading corporate functions including and not limited to: Workplace Health & Safety - Cert IV of higher required
  • Holds a current C Class Queensland Driver's Licence
  • Current Working with Children Check, 'Blue Card'
  • Holds or is willing to obtain a First Aid and CPR Certificate
  • Sound knowledge of relative frameworks and standards relating to the organisation as well as any relative legislation, regulations, and best practice operations
  • Ability to build effective relationships, negotiate and provide high level strategic advice and coaching to the management team
  • Experience at successful service delivery to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
