Context & Environment

As part of its ambition to achieve net zero by 2050, TotalEnergies is building a portfolio of renewable energy and electricity businesses. TotalEnergies will continue to develop this activity to reach 35 GW of gross production capacity from renewable sources by 2025, then 100 GW by 2030, with the goal of being among the world's top 5 wind and solar power producers.

In this context, we have an internship opportunity at Integrated Power Modeling (IPM) Team at Saclay. The team's primary mission is to develop new tools and methods to better characterize wind resources and the potential production of the Company's onshore and offshore wind farms.

Activities

The expansion of offshore wind energy has resulted in wind farm clustering, where wind farm interaction via wind farm wake is inescapable. Alarming new measurement data from the German Bight shows that wind farm waves may travel over 150 kilometers between offshore wind farms. This wake from external wind farms is grossly underestimated by the present modelling tool routinely used in the wind industry, putting projects at risk and laying the path for future conflicts over "wind theft."

The internship is part of the methodological goal of downscaling global wind data and tackling external wake modeling in offshore wind farms. The main responsibilities of the intern include:

  • Perform mesoscale atmospheric simulations to down-scale Global Wind Data (i.e., ERA5) to understand wind patterns at potential site in German Bight or elsewhere and incorporating wind farm parameterizations (like the Fitch or EWP) to simulate the impact of neighboring turbine wakes.
  • It is also expected to adopt multi-model approach to combine WRF output with specialized engineering or high-fidelity models (e.g., WiFAS-AEP, AMR-Wind) to capture interactions between the larger atmospheric flow and the detailed wake dynamics of multiple wind farms and making parametric study of numerous physics and model parameters.
  • Evaluating model performance both computationally and accuracy using satellite and other measurements
  • Collaborating within an interdisciplinary team and presenting results at scientific meetings and conference / peer-reviewed scientific journals.

You will evolve within a team of experienced professionals and with a tutor-coach, the reference for your future profession. Individualized support will help you develop your autonomy and lead you to your diploma!

Candidate Profile

Currently enrolled in an engineering school in the R&D field, are you looking for an 6-month end-of-study internship starting in March 2026?
