Job Description

As part of the team you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Perform a thorough evaluation of existing Satellite Emergency Notification Device services, IoT, telecom and innovative technologies like AI which could be relevant to maritime, aviation, and mountain rescue.
  • Execute a SWOT analysis on SAR/Galileo services and Cospas-Sarsat.
  • Research and document innovative solutions that reduce dependencies on the Cospas-Sarsat system while maximizing the use of the existing Galileo infrastructure.
  • Examine opportunities for integration with emerging technologies and commercial solutions, as well as evaluating the potential for standardization to inform the development of targeted solutions.
  • Utilization and Enhancement of Galileo Infrastructure: maximize the use of existing Galileo ground and space infrastructure considering potential evolutions (e.g., cross-strap connection, additional assets deployment)
  • Development of new SAR services and a self-standing solution: minimize dependencies on COSPAS-SARSAT.
  • Integration with Institutional Satellite Systems and Services: integrate SAR service within LEO/Low MEO (IRIS², LEO-PNT, Copernicus….)
  • Collaboration with Commercial Systems and Services
  • Exploration of Innovative Radio Signal Design: improve performances, minimize dependencies on Cospas-Sarsat
  • Development of new Services for SAR Operators: improvement of decision-making for SAR response
  • For every identified solution, the document shall include, but shall not be limited to:
  • Preliminary Description: A concise overview of the solution’s objectives, scope, and functional requirements.
  • Trade-Off Analysis: result of key analysis (e.g., link budget, simulation results, performance metrics…) to assess feasibility, efficiency, and technical viability.
  • Operational, System, and Service Concept: An outline of the proposed operational framework, system architecture, and service delivery model.
  • Risk Analysis: A detailed assessment of potential risks, mitigation strategies, and their impact on solution implementation.
  • Following the down selection of the most promising solutions at the Consolidation Review, an in-depth examination of these innovative concepts shall be performed. The enhanced analysis will focus on various aspects, including: mission requirements, operational concept and architecture, service preliminary design, system preliminary design, standardization analysis and public-private service provision scheme (if applicable).
  • Preliminary Description: A concise overview of the solution’s objectives, scope, and functional requirements.
  • Trade-Off Analysis: result of key analysis (e.g., link budget, simulation results, performance metrics…) to assess feasibility, efficiency, and technical viability.
  • Operational, System, and Service Concept: An outline of the proposed operational framework, system architecture, and service delivery model.
  • Risk Analysis: A detailed assessment of potential risks, mitigation strategies, and their impact on solution implementation.

Qualifications

You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience:

  • Masters or PhD in navigation or a relevant discipline;
  • Experience in assessments of existing SAR systems and emerging technologies such as IoT, telecom, and AI relevant to maritime, aviation, and mountain rescue operations;             
  • Experience in Developing operational concepts and system architectures for new SAR services, including self-standing solutions leveraging Galileo infrastructure;
  • Experience in integration of pathways with commercial systems and emerging technologies, while evaluating standardization potential to support scalable and interoperable SAR solutions.
