Histotechnologist, Full Time Evenings, ACL

Under the direct Supervision of the Gross Room Manager, the Histotechnologist/ Grossing Assistant assists in the gross examination of anatomic pathology biopsy specimens. Responsibilities include receiving, dissecting, photographing, and describing surgical specimens to ensure proper processing for accurate diagnoses.

Job Responsibilities:

• Specimen Handling: Receives and verifies patient specimens with accurate documentation. Prepares and preserves tissues for examination, ensuring proper handling, fixation, and embedding. Performs gross examination of biopsies and simple surgical specimens, processes samples for histology, and assists with dissection, embedding, and sectioning while maintaining accurate labeling to prevent errors.
• Result Reporting: Describes gross anatomic features of surgical specimens, assists in drafting and compiling gross pathology reports for pathologist review, and photographs appropriate specimens.
• Equipment Operation: Operates, maintains and troubleshoots all technical equipment according to approved standard operating procedures. 
• Quality Control: Follows quality control policies, documents all related activities, and maintains records of instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance.  
• Proficiency Testing:  Participates in proficiency testing, as assigned and ensures samples are treated the same as patient samples. 
• Inventory Management:  Manage inventory by rotating stock and checking supply expiration dates to ensure availability and compliance.
• Training:  Assists with training of team members and students. 
• Safety:  Demonstrates knowledge and practice of all Atlantic Health and department safety procedures. 

Minimum Education:

1. High School graduate/GED required
2. Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory or equivalent education and training highly preferred
3. Completion of courses for Histology technician or equivalent training
4. HT(ASCP) cert. preferred 

Experience:

1. Minimum of (1) year experience in a clinical laboratory setting or equivalent, including gross dissection and dictation of surgical biopsy specimens preferred.
