Microsoft Defender Security Research team is a global team of security researchers, advanced threat hunters, and agile malware responders at the forefront of protecting the Microsoft ecosystem from emerging security threats. Our research powers protection in products like Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection, Office 365, Azure, and more.

We are looking for a Senior Security Researcher with experiences working with all service aspects of high throughput and multi-tenant services, ability to design components carefully, properly handle errors, write clean and well-factored code with tests and maintainability.
Responsibilities
- Conduct research that yield new insights, theories, analyses, data, algorithms, and prototypes that advance state-of-the-art of malware protection.
- Investigate, analyze, and learn from security researchers, attackers and real incidents in order to develop durable detection solution/strategies across the kill-chain or product/OS enhancements.
- Work with other internal and external teams to forge new and improve existing partnerships that help mature the product.
- Provide exemplary leadership in an exceptionally challenging and rewarding environment and influence the organization.
- Collaborate with other researchers, coordinators, and developers to improve the protection capabilities of the products.
- Help advance the internal researcher tooling capabilities
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field
- OR 5+ years experience in software development lifecycle, large-scale computing, modeling, cybersecurity, and/or anomaly detection.
- 5+ years of computer security industry experience utilizing reverse engineering and knowledge of security/threat landscape.
- 3+ years of development skills with C, C++, C# and scripting languages (Python/Powershell).
- OR 5+ years experience in software development lifecycle, large-scale computing, modeling, cybersecurity, and/or anomaly detection.
Other Requirements
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft background and Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. Additional or preferred qualifications
- Doctorate in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field
- OR 6+ years experience in software development lifecycle, large-scale computing, modeling, cybersecurity, and/or anomaly detection.
- Reverse Engineering skills: familiar with debuggers, disassemblers, network protocols, file formats, sandboxes, hardware/firmware internals, software communication mechanisms
- Knowledge of Windows operating system internals and modern security problems
- Cross group and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate the business need for security or detection improvements.
- Familiarity with Web Front-End development
- OR 6+ years experience in software development lifecycle, large-scale computing, modeling, cybersecurity, and/or anomaly detection.
Security Research IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
