The Backbone and Edge team is responsible for the design and ongoing ownership of Meta’s datacenter-to-POP IP backbone, IP networking in our POPs and our IP peering.

This role involved development of IP connectivity solutions and network designs, working in close collaboration with partner teams. This includes designing the network topology, understanding and selecting industry technologies and protocols, liaising with vendors on feature or product development, and choosing network products and platform which align with our product needs. We champion innovation, so you'll be directly involved in bringing new network products to life, from the initial concept to a functional network in our labs. While design and documentation are essential aspects of your role, we believe in the value of hands-on experience as you take your design from concept through to feasibility in our lab.

As a Network Production Engineer, you will blend software and network engineering skills to ensure smooth network operations, enable future growth, use data analysis to influence design decisions, and leverage automation to achieve the scale and velocity required for Meta's expanding demands.Network Production Engineer, Backbone & Edge Networks Responsibilities
  • Design, deploy, manage and maintain multi-vendor, IP backbone and Internet peering networks for Meta’s production network
  • Develop and implement BGP routing policies, peering strategies, firewall/ACL and DDoS mitigation strategies for our Internet peering and transit
  • Develop documentation, capacity plans, and operational procedures for the IP network
  • Design and deploy new network topologies, protocols and tooling
  • Analyze data to diagnose and identify root causes to network issues
  • Develop and review code, develop documentation and capacity plans, and debug the hardest problems, live, on some of the largest and most complex networks and systems in the world
  • Together with your engineering team, you will share an on-call rotation and be an escalation contact for service incidents
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 6+ years of experience in network engineering or network-centric software development
  • 2+ years experience coding in higher-level languages (e.g., Python, C++, Go, etc.)
  • Experience developing and understanding network device configuration for at least one vendor (Juniper, Cisco, Arista, Brocade, Nokia, Linux, etc.)
  • Protocol experience in one of BGP, OSPF, ISIS - understanding of typical configurations and performance optimizations
  • Experience as an IP networks operator in a network design or network troubleshooting role
  • In-depth experience of of TCP/IP and IPv6
  • In-depth experience of BGP configurations, policy management and performance optimizations for Internet peering and transit
  • Experience with Internet Exchange (IX) fabrics, private network interconnect (PNI) and transit interconnect
  • Knowledge of PeeringDB, bilateral BGP sessions, rPKI and peering automation
  • Experience with firewall filter policy and management, DDoS detection and mitigation
  • Experience developing code to automate Network deployments, monitoring or remediation

$147,000/year to $208,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits
