Job Duties

Western State Hospital seeks an experienced Registered Nurse to work as a Registered Nurse Coordinator (Unit Manager). As a Registered Nurse Coordinator, your job duties typically revolve around overseeing the nursing staff and ensuring the smooth functioning of the unit. Must be a current state employee to be eligible for this position.

- Provide leadership, guidance, and direction to the nursing staff. Develop and implement unit policies, procedures, and standards of care. Promote a positive work environment and foster teamwork among the staff.
- Train, retain, and evaluate nursing personnel. Assign duties and delegate responsibilities to the nursing staff based on their skills and qualifications. Provide ongoing coaching, support, and performance feedback to ensure high-quality care delivery.
- Coordinate and facilitate patient care activities within the unit. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, and social workers, to develop and implement individualized patient care plans. Ensure adherence to established protocols and best practices.
- Monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care within the unit. Conduct regular audits, assessments, and performance evaluations to identify areas for improvement. Implement quality improvement initiatives and participate in accreditation and regulatory compliance activities.
- Manage unit resources, including staffing levels, equipment, and supplies, to ensure optimal efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Collaborate with the hospital administration and other departments to address resource needs and resolve any operational issues.
- Facilitate ongoing education and professional development opportunities for the nursing staff. Stay updated on the latest advancements in nursing practice and ensure staff compliance with mandatory training requirements and continuing education.
- Identify and mitigate potential risks and safety hazards within the unit. Promote a culture of patient safety and ensure adherence to infection control protocols, medication administration guidelines, and other safety measures.
- Foster effective communication and collaboration within the unit, with the nursing administration, colleagues, and other departments. Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, committees, and task forces to contribute to organizational goals and initiatives.
- Registered nurse coordinator is required to work 20% of monthly hours as a charge nurse or medication RN.

Minimum Qualifications

KSA’s and/or competencies required to successfully perform the work (attach Competency Model if applicable), extensive knowledge of mental illnesses and principles of leadership, management and team building and quality improvement. Demonstrates ability to plan, organize and direct unit-based comprehensive nursing activities. Demonstrates ability to supervise, train, develop and motivate employees. Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Nursing Leadership peers, discipline staff, administration, the public and other agencies. Ability to supervise and make judgments about staff performance and provide actionable positive and corrective feedback. Ability to effectively manage resources and multiple, changing priorities. Comprehensive knowledge of administrative functions and demonstrated ability to evaluate clinical and administrative issues.

Additional Considerations

Veteran or Spouse of Veteran.
Bilingual - Spanish preferred.
Current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or Compact License.
Graduation from an accredited nursing program (BSN, MSN preferred).
Experience in nursing leadership preferred.
