Job Duties
Virginia State University (VSU) seeks applicants for an Assistant Director for the Academic Center of Excellence (ACE). The Assistant Director will provide administrative assistance as directed through the following:
Assist the daily operations of the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), including, maintaining a welcoming and supportive environment, and coordinating resources for students and visitors.
Contributes to student success by assisting students with anything that supports their student experience, whether directly or indirectly.
Work collaboratively with campus units innovative academic support programs aimed at improving student retention and completion rates.
Use the institution’s early alert system to monitor at-risk students and implement targeted interventions to promote academic success.
Assist in designing and implementing tools to assess the effectiveness academic support programs, compile usage statistics/data, and prepare detailed reports on student outcomes and program success.
Assist in serving a contact for visitors, responding to inquiries, answering calls, and providing assistance to students, faculty, and staff.
Serve as an academic advisor/coach to assigned students.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director to support the overall mission of the ACE.
Minimum Qualifications
To successfully perform the duties of the Assistant Director of ACE, the candidate must possess the following:
Demonstrated strong knowledge of office and educational technologies, particularly Microsoft Office 365, and demonstrate proficiency in platforms such as Canvas, Banner9, and Navigate360.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, along with proven people management and administrative capabilities.
Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new software, handle sensitive information with discretion, and work both independently and collaboratively in a high-traffic, student-centered environment.
Demonstrated competencies to include a deep understanding of the college student experience, especially in supporting students facing academic and personal challenges through advising and coaching, as well as a commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and inclusivity in academic support services.
Additional Considerations
Preferred qualifications include three to five (3-5) years of relevant job experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Canvas, Banner9 and Navigate360. A demonstrated eagerness to expand one’s technology skill set, a passion for tackling new projects and challenges, and a proven ability to work sensitively and effectively with students from diverse backgrounds are also essential.
