Clinical Lab Scientist Trainee - Full Time
Shift: Variable 8 hour shifts, primarily days.

- Candidates must possess a valid CLS Trainee License issues by CDPH Lab Field Services prior to program enrollment.
Job Description:
PATIENT POPULATION:
The patient population served can be all patients including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors and the general public.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The CLS Trainee will be responsible to: Work on a schedule arranged by the education coordinator, always under the direct supervision of the section lead, or other licensed CLS. Perform laboratory tasks and procedures independently only when approved by a licensed CLS. At no time are trainees allowed to perform tasks or accept responsibilities that are beyond the scope of their abilities/competence. Tasks will be limited to preanalytical, and analytical patient testing, and under no circumstance will a trainee be allowed to finalize results that will become a part of the permanent patient record. Such duties may include loading specimens on their designated instruments, setting up patient assays, instrument maintenance, participation in the laboratory quality assurance program, and following all policies and procedures of the department and organization. Competency in all areas of training will be determined by each section lead CLS, or other licensed CLS, and evaluated following the performance review scoring guidelines and section competency checklist. Consulting regularly with the education coordinator to determine progress and to discuss any problems or concerns arising during the training period.
Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:
Should possess a minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. It is highly recommended that candidates complete the program's required courses within 5 years prior to applying for this position. Courses in molecular biology, immunohematology, parasitology and genetics are highly desirable. Laboratory experience, lab/research techniques are preferred, but not mandatory.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:
All applicants must possess a current Clinical Laboratory Scientist Trainee license, issued by the State of California's Laboratory Field Services department.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
*Indicates Essential Function
1 Is responsible, under the guidance or a licensed CLS, for the assessment, treatment or care appropriate to the ages of the patients served. Demonstrates the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs. Possesses knowledge of growth and development and has an understanding of the range of treatment needed for all patient groups.
2 Works effectively in all assigned areas and performs waived, moderately complex, and highly complex testing under the direct supervision of a licensed CLS.
3* Performs calibration, instrumentation repairs, and preventive maintenance, adhering to the quality assurance program of the laboratory, under the direct supervision of a licensed CLS.
4* Communicates and reports abnormal findings to CLS who reports to Physicians, Nursing Staff, and/or Pathologist, as outlined by the department policy
5* Successfully passes all written tests in all areas of training.
6 Assumes role of CLS in all areas after demonstrating competency but leaving final verification of tests to supervising CLS or education coordinator.
7 Be in attendance on site and arrive to work on time.
