About Highland Valley Copper

Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operations is Canada’s largest open-pit copper mine and molybdenum operation. HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding and flotation.
 
Located approximately 17 kilometers west of Logan Lake and about 50 kilometers southwest of Kamloops in British Columbia, the surrounding areas of HVC have an abundant offering of outdoor experiences.

For this exciting position, we are specifically targeting students who have a background in Civil Engineering. The successful candidate must possess outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with individuals of a diverse set of backgrounds. If you are not currently located in the area of this co-op position, you must be willing to either commute or relocate to the surrounding area for the entire duration of the co-op term. You must also currently be a student enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution and will be enrolled throughout the duration of the co-op term (you will also be returning back to the post-secondary institution once the co-op term is completed). Proof of a valid work permit will also be required, if applicable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures  
  • Participate in the health and safety programs of Teck to ensure that everyone on site goes home safe and healthy every day  
  • Update data systems and prepare internal communication  
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to build and use detailed designs for civil projects on site  
  • Assist with coordinating civil projects on active mine sites as well as coordinate, schedule and control the cost of projects; providing status reports on progress  
  • Support quantity take-off and cost analysis  
  • Assist with planning, scheduling and handling construction contractors and supervising progress  
  • Build and evaluate innovative ideas and technologies to help improve the way we do business  

Qualifications

  • Working towards an Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience in Civil Engineering  
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously 
  • Comfortable working in a multifaceted work environment, with a willingness to work outdoors, and able to operate vehicles in various weather conditions and terrain  
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with a capability to communicate sophisticated ideas to all levels  
  • Previous work experience in a technical or engineering environment is an asset  
  • Experience with form design, macros, and data analysis is an asset  
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite® of applications: Word, Excel, Power Point, and Project  
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil3D would be an asset  
  • Able to work efficiently independently as well as part of the team  
  • Consistent track record to learn innovative technologies and platforms quickly, accurately, and efficiently  
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for the duration of the co-op is required  

All students will be required to complete a pre-employment drug testing prior to commencing work. 

Pay Range: CAD $4,700 - $6,000 per month

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.

Working Conditions:

  • Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.
  • Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
