Pay Range

$182,310 - $277,344 Annually

$182,310 - $231,180 Annually for the SEL.3 level

$218,700 - $277,344 Annually for the SEL.4 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. Job Description

We have an opening for a Senior Product Realization Team (PRT) Leader for the W87-1 Modernization Program’s High Explosives (HE) PRT. You will lead the PRT to develop requirements and produce components within the specific PRT’s scope in partnership with the NNSA Production Agencies and programmatic staff from across the laboratory to include Physics, Chemistry, and Quality. You will manage a detailed schedule in coordination with the PRT Control Account Manager to ensure on time delivery to support the program. This position will be in Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED) within the Engineering Directorate. DTED supports the Strategic Deterrence (SD) Program.

Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week. 

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You Will

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction, guidance, and support to a multidisciplinary team of engineers in accomplishing complex project engineering and management, design development, product realization, qualification, and certification project/program goals.
  • Lead, manage, and maintain effective PRT relationships in collaborations with Production Agencies (PAs) executing HE manufacturing.
  • Define and establish project objectives and specific technical direction and strategies for the team and lead, direct, and assign work to engineering team members by guiding and balancing workload planning among team members, assigning work, and remaining cognizant of complex technical goals, problems, and solutions, as well as obtaining ongoing performance feedback and tracking progress of group projects, milestones, and schedules to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Define, track, and complete PRT objectives on time and within budget by working in collaboration with other essential LLNL support personnel.
  • Monitor performance required to meet programmatic milestones and deliverables, engage to correct deficiencies, and lead and advise on corrective actions where necessary.
  • Represent the PRT at meetings, briefings, and committee activities both internal and external to the Laboratory; providing advanced technical analysis and recommendations.
  • Provide, present, and explain technical updates, ensure that PRT risks and requirements are communicated in an effective and timely manner, and provide advice to program leadership, customers, and external sponsors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level 

  • Work with program management and external stakeholders to perform high level goal setting, contribute to strategic planning efforts for long range goals, identify new opportunities, and influence strategic decisions.
  • Strategically anticipate, identify, and provide technical leadership to team to stay ahead of potential high complexity problems.
  • Perform in-depth analysis and use innovative methods to determine and implement solutions to highly unusual or highly complex problems, develop new ideas, modify approaches, and/or redefine requirements that impact organizational operations or directions.
  • Utilize expertise in weapon design engineering, product lifecycle processes, and qualification work to mentor staff across the PRT and provide advice across the program.
  • Serve as subject matter expert and spokesperson for the program to Laboratory management and/or peers in the Nuclear Security Enterprise.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and significant experience with design engineering, product lifecycle processes, certification, and qualification work.
  • Significant experience in project leadership and demonstrated ability to successfully lead work in a technical or scientific environment.
  • Advanced level knowledge and skills in systems and design engineering.
  • Advanced level organizational skills, and advanced knowledge and significant experience with project management tools and techniques, including work planning, scheduling, cost estimating, analyzing, and managing budgets.
  • Advanced level problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop and implement effective solutions for complex technical challenges.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, and provide advice to management.
  • Advanced facilitation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead cross functional teams and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, as well as to  promote and maintain productive relationships across programs and directorates.
  • Experience working independently and demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously, responding to changing priorities, ensuring timely and accurate completion of reviews and assessments, meeting deadlines, and keeping management informed.
  • Ability to travel.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.4 level 

  • Subject matter expert knowledge of and extensive experience in systems and design engineering.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, negotiation and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, mediate, compromise, influence, and advise senior management and external stakeholders.
  • Extensive experience and expertise, and demonstrated ability to effectively apply, lead, modify, and/or develop highly advanced principles, theories, concepts, and technologies.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience in nuclear weapon systems engineering and design.
  • Significant experience with NNSA production agencies.
