Job Description

General Summary

  • Under limited/general supervision, performs employee health duties and functions including adult health assessments, phlebotomies, TB and immunization screenings and emergency and injury management of personnel. Determines with the Hospitalist, course of treatment/interventions; and provides related employee and visitor education. Models’ excellence in customer service behaviors.
  • Identifies and acts on opportunities to respond to customer requirements. Takes action to prevent potential customer complaints. Initiates service recovery processes and completes appropriate documentation in response to customer concerns. Uses hand-off communication to convey appropriate employee/clinical information. Identifies and addresses potential breeches in employee information management and confidentiality (HIPAA) issues.
  • Serves as a mediator, collaborative resource within the interdisciplinary team as appropriate. Precepts, mentors and provides an inclusive environment for the education and professional development of the persons served. Provides performance feedback as requested within peer review systems. Voices difference in opinion professionally through appropriate channels
  • Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age, culture, ethnicity, and specific individual diagnostic needs of the patients served in his/her department. He/she must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s specific needs and provide the care needed by the patient group (pediatric, adolescents and/or geriatric patient group, culture and diagnostic specific).
  • Consistently expresses and demonstrates compassion and courtesy for patients. Extends courtesy and support to patient’s families/visitors.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Electronic/Paper documentation- Assures accurate and concise entry of patient care delivery along the continuum Guides staff in documenting/entering data correctly in the medical record/EMR. as verified by chart review. Completes required training on electronic documentation.
  • Wound Care-Guides employees in wound management processes that promote healing and maintain structural integrity of the skin. Holds self-responsible to perform a comprehensive skin assessment of the patient/employee including accurate use of Braden Scale to assess risk of skin breakdown. Guides employees in identifying risk factors for impaired skin integrity. Assures appropriate strategies and/or treatment measures to prevent skin deterioration are implemented. Assures nutrition and wound care consultative services are obtained as indicated by findings.
  •  Pain Management-Intervenes, alleviates or reduces pain to a level of comfort acceptable to the patient. Guides employees in pain management processes. Holds self-accountable to screen the employee for pain. Guides employees in identifying and implementing appropriate interventions to manage pain. Completes annual competency for pain recognition and pain therapies- skill checklist on file.
  • Team Leadership- Uses interpersonal and clinical skills to foster the concepts of team collaboration and team unity. Develops communication skills to enhance networking with other clinical staff. Encourages and empowers the staff toward professional growth despite diversity and personal differences. Uses multiple strategies toward organizational and/or unit change(s) for improvement. Assists the staff toward improving their individual or collective performance and productivity areas for improvement. Enhances professional growth and organizational skills of team members. Demonstrates ability for time management and conflict resolution skills.
  • Blood Glucose Monitoring (Accu-check) - Holds self-accountable for waived testing processes and patient care management based on results achieved and clinical findings. Attends annual training for review and updates on blood glucose testing and monitoring equipment. Guides staff in proper technique and skills required for obtaining accurate blood glucose results and documentation of findings. Completes annual didactic and/or written testing with results kept on file. Quality monitoring performance is assessed annually and/or as needed at intervals based on performance criteria.
  • Collection of Specimens - Hold self-accountable to follow procedural guidelines and proper technique(s) to obtain bodily specimen collection for laboratory testing. Completes annual didactic and/or written testing with results kept on file.

  • Exhibits a high level of critical thinking and clinical competency related to employee health processes, protocols and activities.
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the effectiveness of employee health activities and care provided. Institutes changes to improve processes and outcomes where need is evaluated or data indicates.
  •  Educates RN coverage /staff in effective care, documentation and communication of Employee Health activities including required components of assessment, care planning, and evaluation of treatment outcomes.
  • Models change agent role in support of department /organizational goals and problem-solving initiatives.
  • Develops competency and performance of fellow staff by creating/ updating /conducting integrated Employee Health training, UTD protocols, and education materials.
  • Provides an interdisciplinary approach to employee/ staff and patient education in accordance with employee needs and barriers encountered.
  • Conducts employee wellness programs including the annual flu vaccine administration program and blood drives.
  •  Acts as a liaison with contractual staff in provision of their on-site employee emergency health screening, triaging and treatment
  • Coordinates the Worker’s Compensation processes for all employees and volunteers, including illness and injury triage, treatment, counseling/ education, referrals, reporting, and monitoring.
  • Coordinates the pre-employment health screening process for all new hire employee and volunteer candidates: Assesses for wellness / health history of candidates utilizing the nursing process and required diagnostic / screening modalities. Identifies, reports appropriately and directs resolution of health concerns directly or potentially impacting employment and /or related job duties / responsibilities. Counsels candidates regarding health concern resolution outcomes, including outcomes which prevent completion of hire process. Conveys with discretion final determination of health screening assessments to HR personnel according to HIPPA regulations and hospital policies.
  • Oversees and administers the Blood Borne Exposure program: Promotes prompt response of staff and managers to a blood borne exposure/ occurrence. Screens, completes required diagnostic testing, counsels / and educates employee per CDC guidelines. Coordinates counsel and treatment rendered by hospitalist staff to employee. Monitors and reports compliance and follow up of person served as needed through confidential and appropriate channels. Reports adverse patient/ staff outcome / result according to CDC and HIPPA (federal and state) guidelines. Develops and implements blood borne exposure policy updates and related staff education for same.
  • Reports Employee Health statistics and identified trends / PI issues in appropriate organizational forum(s).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Current licensure in the State of Maryland as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current CPR card required.
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited school of nursing or related field is required.
  • Recent clinical skills with five years medical-surgical and/or rehabilitation experience.
  • Previous experience in Employee Health (including adult health assessment, phlebotomy, EKG, accucheck, TB screens (including PPD), and immunization screens) is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, and database) are preferred.
  • Critical thinking skills and highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Highly effective verbal communication skills including courtesy, resourcefulness and efficiency in answering questions, giving directions, locating staff and explaining hospital/departmental policies and procedures are necessary. Verbal communication skills may include communicating with an interdisciplinary team, patients, and families. Effective writing skills are also required in order to take messages and maintain miscellaneous records, receipts, reports and logs.
