Summary Of This Role

The Underwriter  II will provide timely and unparalleled excellence in processing and evaluating merchant applications for new applications and existing merchants; while maintaining optimum safety and profitability of the portfolio

What Part Will You Play?

  • Primarily focus in low to medium risk merchant applications.
  • Make credit decision on new merchant accounts up to approval risk limits based on credit policy and credit worthiness of the business and/or the owners/principals
  • Evaluate and make recommendations to Senior Underwriter, Lead Underwriter, Underwriting Manager and Senior Management on accounts beyond individual approval authority level.
  • Perform financial statement and industry comparative analysis on potential high volume merchants as well as high risk merchant as required by credit policy and Senior Underwriter / Lead Underwriter or Underwriting Manager. (for new applications and existing merchants).
  • Ensure that department productivity goals and objectives are met on a daily basis.
  • Minimize liability risk to Company through sound credit decisions
  • Complete all departmental special assignments in a timely manner
  • Refer existing high-risk merchants to Credit Review with recommended actions.
  • Provide high level of customer service to prospective merchants, sales representatives and internal company employees.
  • Handle priority items and special projects as assigned by Senior Underwriter / Lead Underwriter or Underwriting Manager.
  • Other duties that may be assigned from time to time to ensure the smooth operation of the Department including special assignments.
  • Verify all information provided on the merchant application and supporting documentation is correct and consistent with required standards.
  • Call merchants regarding their applications when needed to verify information. 
  • Evaluates a variety of applications and ensures compliance with laws, bank regulation, corporate and divisional underwriting policies, procedures and standards.  
  • Analyzes all pertinent credit and financial information, and demonstrates aptitude to interpret and evaluate consumer credit bureau reports, other reporting services, public records and bank files.
  • Communicate decisions effectively in both verbal and written communication. 
  • Properly File Paperwork.

  • Demonstrate good listening, interpersonal and team working skills. 

What Are We Looking For In This Role?

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Accounting or combination of a related degree and experience (Collections, Accounting, Underwriting, Credit Banking, Finance, Mortgage, Etc.)
  • Typically minimum 1-2 years relevant experience in finance/accounting, credit, risk or equivalent experience in a related field required.
  • Competency reading credit reports and business financial statements.
  • The ability to understand credit card payment processing industry requirements and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks, within tight deadlines and little supervision
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in team driven environment while working independently to complete daily tasks
  • Proficiency with computer programs used for daily work (MS Office, Google Workspace)
  • Team Player and positive-attitude driven with great collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous knowledge of the payment processing industry is preferred.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)
