This position requires a strong foundation in Telecom principles and requires extensive collaboration with Network, Mechanical, Electrical, and Architectural teams. The projects will encompass Retail, Hyperscale, and Hybrid data centre design. Other responsibilities include financial planning and reporting; vendor management; real estate evaluation; contract negotiations; bid analysis; legal assessments; and business development.
This is a newly created role to support our EMEA region in our Global Design and Construction strategy at an exciting period of growth. Occasional travel may be required for project delivery, depending on project locations, which involves exposure to construction environments.
Preferred locations London, Slough, Milan and Frankfurt, however we would consider applications from other locations where Equinix have a presence in EMEA.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management
- Oversee global Digital Infrastructure Engineering ICT design, processes, projects, and programs.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement design and infrastructure strategies, ensuring adherence to Digital Infrastructure ICT Engineering and Construction standards.
- Define project scope, objectives, and deliverables in partnership with internal stakeholders specific to data centre construction.
- Facilitate project meetings, document minutes and action items, and ensure thorough follow-up.
- Conduct regular site inspections to monitor progress and quality, focusing on critical systems.
- Develop and implement mitigation strategies to minimize impacts on project timelines and budgets.
- Organize and maintain project documentation for future reference.
Technical
- Responsible for the effectiveness of Digital Infrastructure ICT Engineering and Construction application design.
- Demonstrate familiarity with data centre design principles, including Tier classifications, redundancy, and scalability.
- Contribute to updates of global Digital Infrastructure ICT Engineering and Construction standards as needed.
- Ensure compliance with Equinix standards, relevant regulations, codes, and industry best practices specific to data centres.
- Collaborate with peers in other regions to drive consistency and technical excellence in design and delivery practices.
- Maintain knowledge of construction methods, materials, and legal regulations relevant to data centres (e.g., electrical systems, cooling technologies, fire safety).
- Research and analyse data to evaluate operational challenges and authorize necessary actions to resolve issues.
Vendor Relations:
- Manage global relationships with vendors and suppliers supporting design, hardware installations, upgrades, configurations, repairs, and maintenance services.
- Support in negotiating leases or private construction agreements for bulk dark fibre projects with external suppliers.
- Foster and maintain high-value vendor relationships.
Training Programs
- Identify and contribute to the development of training programs for team members.
- Engage in cross-functional training initiatives.
Contract Administration
- Manage Digital Infrastructure ICT Engineering and Construction budgets, coordinating CapEx allocation with the Commercial Management team.
- Conduct near- and long-term financial forecasts to support business objectives.
- Address quality issues or non-compliance promptly and effectively.
- Contribute to the creation and maintenance of best-in-class policies and procedures.
- Ensure orders are processed in accordance with Equinix’s service and operational standards to maintain data integrity and invoice accuracy.
Leadership Management:
- Direct internal and external project team members, including Design, Procurement, Operations, and IT/Network support teams.
- Monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) at a metro level.
- Prepare and present regular project status reports to Digital Infrastructure Group leadership and stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Business Information Systems, Construction Management, or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Extensive knowledge of Telecommunications and Internet technologies and systems.
- Fundamental understanding of inside plant/outside plant fibre optic cabling and optical components (e.g., DWDM, amplifiers, DCM).
- Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Preferred experience in Network Design, including Network Systems, Building Management Systems (BMS), Data Centre Operating Systems (DCOS), Security, and Customer-facing platforms.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Visio, PowerPoint, Excel, Word), AutoCAD, and Revu Bluebeam.
