2026 R&D and Data Science Internship – ATI Specialty Materials

Location: Monroe, NC

Duration: 10 Weeks (Summer Internship)

Eligible Students: Rising Juniors, Seniors, or Master’s Candidates in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Data Science

At ATI, we develop the world’s most advanced materials for aerospace, defense, energy, and medical applications. As an R&D Intern, you’ll explore metallurgical science, contributing directly to projects that improve alloy performance, melt quality, and yield optimization.

• What You’ll Work On

R&D Intern Projects

• Titanium Alloy Characterization: Conduct microstructural evaluations and correlate them to processing variables and performance.
• Heat Treatment Studies: Support alloy-specific heat treat trials, analyze hardness or phase response.
• Forging and Rolling Trials: Participate in thermo-mechanical processing experiments and interpret property outcomes.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in:
• Materials Science & Engineering
• Familiarity with:
• Python, R, or MATLAB for modeling or data analysis (Data Science)
• Metallurgical testing methods, forging/heat treat fundamentals (R&D)
• Tools such as Excel, JMP, Minitab, ImageJ, or CAD/FEA software
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Interest in process-structure-property relationships or intelligent manufacturing
