Job Description:

The Minneapolis Heart Institute (MHI), part of Allina Health, was established in 1981 to help prevent and combat the universal problem of heart disease. MHI is a busy quaternary referral center with an extensive referral network through the upper Midwest, with a unique combination of clinical excellence, education and research. The Physician Assistant works as part of a team in collaboration with other MHI and hospital team members providing care for cardiothoracic surgical patients. Supports all aspects of patient care, including diagnosis, treatment, procedures and consultations as part of a Physician/Advanced Practice Provider team. Works with Cardiovascular care team to provide patient care, physician support and as a liaison between the patient and physician. Serves as an educator and consultant to staff and other members of the multidisciplinary health care team.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Provides clinical care for patients
  • Completes comprehensive patient assessments.
  • Determines diagnosis and treatment of illness.
  • Orders and interprets medical diagnostics in tandem with attending physician.
  • Prescribes medications, treatments, therapy and medical equipment.
  • Conducts patient education when working to manage chronic illness or wellness care.
  • Refers for specialty care when determined.
  • Consults with physician when patient needs outside of Nurse Practitioner scope of practice, diagnosis or treatment plan is unclear.
  • Participates in health care team
  • Promotes communication within the team and other interdisciplinary health care staff.
  • Acts as resource to members of the team.
  • Works with primary care team for program development.
  • Acts as liaison with outside agencies as needed.
  • Collaborates with hospital staff by consulting and rounding on patients if designated by the specialty.
  • Participates as a surgical team member
  • Collaborates with surgeon and other health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcome.
  • Performs focused perioperative nursing assessments.
  • Communicates with other health care providers regarding patient's plan of care.
  • Manages patient care immediately postop with surgeon and other health care providers.
  • Participates in postoperative rounds, assisting in discharge planning, identifying appropriate community resources.
  • Independently perform endoscopic and open saphenous vein harvesting.
  • Independently perform chest wall and incision closure.
  • Participates in daily, weekend and holiday call schedule.
  • Provides direct assistance to surgeon
  • Participates in safe patient placement, surgical prep and draping.
  • Assists surgeon by helping provide exposure, maintain hemostasis, tie or sew, and other technical functions.
  • Anticipates and contributes in retracting, cauterizing, sponging and suturing.
  • Completes wound closure and dressing application as directed by surgeon.
  • Assists surgeon during emergent bedside surgical procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree - Completion of accredited Nurse Practitioner program

Preferred Qualifications

  • New graduates may be considered. Minimum 2 years experience in surgery or cardiology

Licenses/Certifications

  • Licensed Registered Nurse - MN Board of Nursing required upon hire
  • Licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Nurse Practitioner (NP) Certification through ANCC or AANP - MN Board of Nursing required upon hire
  • ACLS-BLS Tier 2 - Multisource required within 180 Days
  • Drug Enforcement Administration required upon hire
  • Valid Driver’s License required upon hire - MN and WI residents must obtain a valid driver’s license in their state of residence within 60 days of employment for those working in Complex Care for Seniors, Community Palliative Care and Hospice

Physical Demands

Pay Range

Pay Range: $57.45 to $79.49 per hourThe pay described reflects the base hiring pay range. Your starting rate would depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your experience, education, and the union agreement (if applicable). Shift, weekend and/or other differentials may be available to increase your pay rate for certain shifts or work.
