*PLEASE NOTE* This posting serves to fill multiple Designer/Engineer positions within our Project Support Substation Control and Physical estimating groups. We are open to considering all levels of experience, provided you meet the basic qualifications outlined below.
Positions are as follows: Location:
Physical Designer/Engineer Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta)
Control Designer/Engineer Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta)
Work Location, Schedule, & Travel
- These positions will be based out of Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta). Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commuting distance.
- Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment).
- This position will require some travel (day and overnight, up to 25%).
Job Summary
These positions are responsible for providing project scoping, estimating, and conceptual design services in support of Southern Company’s Transmission and Distribution Substations. The Engineer/Designer will be responsible for supporting the Operating Company’s planning and budgeting processes by providing complete and accurate estimates of material, labor, and total costs associated with substation projects.
Job Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering (Engineer)
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology (Designer)
- Bachelor’s Degree (non-engineering) with min. 5 years relevant industry experience (Designer)
- Associate Degree with min. 5 years relevant industry experience(Designer)
- No Degree with min. of 8 years relevant industry experience (Designer)
Experience (All):
- Experience in Transmission and/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company is preferred.
- Experience in the field of Substation Engineering, Field Services, Switchboard Wiring, Power Delivery, Substation Maintenance, or Substation Construction is preferred.
- Experience in project development and cost estimating is preferred.
- Experience working with document management & estimating systems such as Transmission Estimating and Management System (TEAMS), STOMP, MAXIMO, SCST Vault is preferred.
- AutoCAD training, experience, or certification is required.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office products is required.
Experience (Specific To Each Role):
For Physical Estimator Engineer/Designer:
- The ability to create Substation Physical Design drawings from a single line diagram is preferred.
- Strong understanding of substation equipment is preferred.
- Strong understanding of the National Electric Safety Code, National Electric Code, and OSHA safe operating practices is preferred.
- Experience and knowledge within Substation Physical Design is a plus.
- Experience and knowledge within Substation Control Design is a plus.
For Control Estimator Engineer/Designer:
- The ability to create Substation Control Design drawings from a single line and wiring diagram is preferred.
- Substation protective relay testing experience along with control scheme testing and commissioning experience a strong plus.
- Understanding of substation protection & control scheme operation is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of operating company’s processes, procedures and tools used in the development of transmission substation projects.
- Knowledge of the SCS Transmission Engineering design standards, processes, procedures, and tools (AutoCAD, Vault, and TEAMS) used to scope, estimate, and design substation projects.
- Must demonstrate excellent communication skills (oral & written) and the ability to communicate technical issues simply.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations governing the design and construction of substation control projects.
- Detailed knowledge of substation Control and/or Physical cost estimating.
- Understanding of substation construction methods, equipment, techniques, and associated costs.
- A good understanding of utility electric grid operations is preferred.
- Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory is preferred.
- Must be a self-starter and exhibit strong problem-solving skills.
- Must work well in a team environment and can develop and build relationships at all levels.
- Must possess effective time management and organizational skills sufficient to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
- Must demonstrate a customer focus with a willingness to meet the needs of our customers and solicit feedback.
- The ability to be an effective mentor to others and teach job-related skills.
- Proven ability to build consensus and achieve results through effective use of persuasive communication and formal presentation skills.
Major Job Responsibilities Include:
- Make SAFETY our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example.
- Apply substation engineering expertise to accurately evaluate projects and provide conceptual design layouts for stakeholder site evaluations using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standards.
- Develop detailed project scopes and conceptual design packages to produce accurate cost estimates and project schedules as the basis for detailed design activities.
- Provide timely and accurate cost estimates to customers including Project Management, Transmission Planning, and Transmission Maintenance Support to facilitate budget development and management.
- Serve as the substation Control/Physical engineering representative on related project site meetings (scoping, status updates, preliminary outage coordination, solution team, site selection committees etc.) and prepare conceptual designs as required to support the process.
- Provide input on the development and refinement of substation engineering estimating units used in the estimating system (TEAMS) to ensure accurate estimates of equipment, material, labor duration, and total costs.
- Provide input on the development and refinement of Control/Physical estimating practices, guidelines, and training.
- Apply substation engineering expertise to support and/or perform QA/QC of peer or contract vendor deliverables.
- Participate in and support Southern Company Transmission activities and initiatives.
- Coordinate and communicate with other design disciplines associated with the substation scopes and conceptual designs.
- Serve as part of a storm restoration team when requested after storm events, predominately, but not limited to the Southern Company service territory.
