Johnson & Johnson is recruiting for an Associate Scientist at the Crystallization Technology Unit (CTU), located in Beerse, Belgium.

We are seeking a dedicated researcher, passionate about novel technologies and eager to contribute to the advancement of new therapeutic modalities. You will become part of a dynamic team of crystallization experts that support the whole Johnson & Johnson portfolio of synthetic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). In this role you will be responsible for the planning and execution of scientific research within CTU, applying existing and innovative methodologies in accordance with established guidelines to support the development of medicines. Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and conduct experiments to assess the crystallization of biomacromolecules (proteins, peptides, oligonucleotides etc.) and contribute to the development of their crystallization and downstream processes. Be involved in multiple projects in the portfolio in several stages of research, from laboratory up to plant scale.
  • Broaden the knowledge base on crystallization and downstream processes in the manufacturing of biomacromolecules (e.g. peptides, oligonucleotides) and small molecules.
  • Use high-throughput experimentation, advanced methods and analytical techniques to gain mechanistic insights and develop a scalable crystallization process that meets API specifications (polymorph, particle properties, purity, etc.)
  • Evaluate crystallization kinetics and thermodynamics to support and/or perform process modelling and design.
  • Capture, analyze, and interpret data from various sources: PAT data, offline analytical data (UPLC, XRD, DSC, Laser Diffraction, etc.)
  • Evaluate downstream processing steps: isolation, drying, and milling.
  • Work with a diverse group of collaborators including R&D chemists, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Drug Product Development, and API manufacturing plants.

Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent experience in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field.

Experience And Skills

  • Hands-on experience with conducting accurate data-rich lab experiments
  • Experience with crystallization techniques, solid-state characterization and/or high-throughput experimental methodologies is highly preferred.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to cooperate in a dynamic team environment. Proven capability to communicate effectively with collaborators from different groups and work together with diverse project teams to develop optimal processes.
  • A passion for scientific research and a willingness to engage in a collaborative team environment.
