Your Role
As a Senior Legal Counsel within the Privacy and Data Protection Team, you will assist the Privacy and Data Protection Manager in ensuring compliance with data and privacy regulations in Australia and New Zealand. Your key responsibilities will include providing legal advice on various aspects of privacy and data management laws, reviewing and drafting legal documentation related to privacy and data protection (such as contractual clauses, policies, and notices), conducting complex Data Protection Impact Assessments, addressing privacy complaints, and assessing eligible data privacy breaches and related incidents. Additionally, you will support the Privacy and Data Protection Manager in preparing metrics-based management reports, liaising with regulators, delivering staff training, and implementing updates to the Privacy framework and associated processes.
Your Responsibilities:
To support the Privacy and Data Protection Manager, under the direction of the General Counsel for Australia and New Zealand, in providing a range of legal services to the Australian and New Zealand operations across all areas of the business, including:
- Providing legal advice on various aspects of privacy and data management laws with limited supervision.
- Reviewing and drafting legal documentation related to privacy and data protection (including contractual clauses, policies, and notices) with limited supervision.
- Assessing complex, potentially reportable privacy breaches and related incidents independently or with limited supervision.
- Assisting in the implementation of Privacy framework and process changes across Chubb Australia and New Zealand.
- Conducting complex Data Protection Impact Assessments independently or with limited supervision.
- Handling privacy complaints independently or with supervision.
- Assisting in liaising with privacy and data protection regulators.
- Supporting the Privacy & Data Protection Officer in compiling metrics-based management reports.
- Assisting with staff training and the preparation of training materials on key topics (including regulatory reforms, I&Bs, PIRs, and DPIAs) with limited supervision.
- Law degree and admission to practice in Australia are necessary.
- Legal experience in the insurance or financial services in either private legal practice or a corporate organisation (preferably an insurance company or other financial institution), and experience in privacy and data protection regulations. Some litigation case management experience is preferable but not essential.
- Highly adept at managing competing priorities in a very busy and high-pressured environment. Excellent time management and organisation skills.
- Strong inter-personal skill and skills at communicating data privacy issues to internal clients in a firm but professional and authoritative manner.
- Demonstrates a strong technical proficiency in understanding how to operate systems and associated processes for conducting Personal Information Request reviews.
