The Operational Risk Manager role is an existing second line role and will work in partnership with Commercial Operations and other functional partners to support and embed the operational risk policy and best practices, particularly as they relate to controls and the PDS ambitions. The role will work closely with Commercial teams, Compliance, Finance and other Functions.

Principal Accountabilities: What is the role?

• Provide 2nd line business-facing expertise and guidance on Operational Risk topics across Commercial Operations
• Credibly advising and partnering with Commercial Operations on how to apply and operationalise the policies and procedures relating to Operational Risk Management
• Guide and support as part of PDS ambitions in order to build in scalable, preventative, automated controls and processes particularly focussing on LoaD.
• Support business decisions by providing advice and direction to the commercial businesses on the health of the LoB control frameworks for Operational Risk
• Contribute to LoB governance meetings related to the Operational Risk profile
• Escalate operational risk/control issues to commercial stakeholders and advise on steps to be taken by the business to manage and/or mitigate the issue
• Promote a positive risk culture which supports a “Learner Mindset” around operational risk issues and encourages leanings from incidents
• Support documentation of Control Learning Events (or equivalent “lessons learned”) by 1Line and, where appropriate, facilitate the “read across” in the LoB / T&S
• Support the commercial business in assessing the design and effectiveness of business controls for Operational Risk whilst providing independent challenge and independent assurance where appropriate

Requirements for the role: What do we need from you?

• Must have demonstrable experience of having worked at a large complex peer institution (Oil & Gas Major, Independent Commodity Trader, Investment Manager / Bank,) in a first or second line risk and control team
• Technical understanding of the suite of controls which are generally employed to mitigate various types of Operational Risk within a complex trading organisation and ability to articulate “what does good look like?”
• Strong ability to work in partnership with the 1st line to deliver pragmatic risk management solutions and relevant for the business

• Strategic thinker with an ability to articulate a vision and to communicate this vision to key stakeholders
• Commercial understanding and good judgement to provide advice, whilst balancing risk and reward
• Strong ability to analyse data in order to generate insights on operational risk and controls
• Strong communication skills, confidence to speak up and challenge plus ability to form effective relationships with stakeholders
