SF Environment - Statement on Racial Equity
For over 20 years, SF Environment has worked with San Francisco’s Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities to mitigate environmental burdens, increase accessibility of environmental programs and benefits, engage community members, and improve health outcomes. Job Description

SF Environment’s Community Partnerships and Engagement Program is hiring two (2) Community Engagement Associates to support our grassroots outreach and engagement strategies. The program consists of the Community Engagement Team, the Environmental Education Team, and the Racial Equity Team. We work within SF Environment to develop outreach, engagement, and education strategies and advance racial equity throughout San Francisco. The Community Engagement Team engages and educates the public in the Department’s programs and promotes San Francisco’s environmental policies to residents, businesses, and other partners.

We are hiring for two (2) positions on the Community Engagement Team; with at least one being bilingual in the following languages:

Cantonese and English, or
Spanish and English, or
Vietnamese and English, or
Filipino and English, or
English and or another language commonly spoken in San Francisco.

Additional Bilingual Pay: Candidates who are bilingual and successfully pass the City's language proficiency test may be eligible for an additional stipend per pay period. Non-bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

The Community Engagement Associate role offers a unique opportunity to build a strong career foundation in the environmental field. You will work with a dedicated team to gain hands-on experience, coaching, and professional development in community engagement, outreach, project management, and leadership. This role is designed to help you grow professionally while developing subject matter expertise and achieving program objectives.

Community Engagement Associates contribute to cross-departmental initiatives that address key environmental issues. Project assignments depend on funding streams and may include zero waste, environmental justice, toxics reduction, climate action, energy, and clean transportation. Training and support will be provided to build foundational expertise in these areas. In this role, you will also develop skills in public speaking, facilitation, and program administration, including the use of the Department’s data software. The knowledge and experience gained will equip you for various career pathways in community engagement, climate, and local government.

The 9922 role is a professional development position. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to gain professional experience in the environmental field as each year you will build upon the skills you've acquired through on-the-job training, experiential learning, and role-specific professional development. You can expect to gain technical and soft skills, apply new knowledge directly to your work, learn from subject matter experts across the department, and receive coaching from your supervisor.

As you grow more comfortable with your role and are able to take on more challenging work, you may also have the opportunity to lead a project that is aligned with your team's goals. The project can be something you initiate on your own or build upon an existing project. The goal of the program is to expose you to different environmental career paths and get you ready for your next professional role, whether that's within or outside of the City.

This position involves some weekend and evening work.

What You’ll Do - The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this position and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

Conduct outreach and engagement activities to promote the Department’s environmental programs and policies. This can include door-to-door outreach, supporting SF Environment’s volunteer program, attending community events, tabling, making phone calls, sending emails, presenting to groups, and administering surveys.
Plan and lead workshops, meetings, and trainings for local businesses, volunteers, neighborhood groups, community partners, and internal teams. This includes presenting PowerPoints to diverse audiences, public speaking at community events, and facilitating internal team meetings.
Use data entry tools to track outreach activities, maintain contact lists, and manage engagement data to share progress, goals, and results through reports.
Assist Coordinators with project operations, such as assisting with planning, coordinating schedules, organizing community-facing events, and communicating with partners.
Support the development of outreach materials, public messaging, and educational content.
Respond to public inquiries and information requests, both verbally and in writing, in a timely and professional manner.
(For bilingual positions) Engage in outreach to residents and stakeholders with limited English proficiency and assist with proofreading translations of program materials.
Provide general administrative support and complete other duties as assigned.

Exempt Employment Status - This is a three-year position, contingent upon Department budget conditions and demonstrated competence and professionalism. Appointment to the position does not guarantee subsequent years of employment nor any future employment with SF Environment or the City and County of San Francisco. In addition, the position is exempt from the Civil Service examination and selection process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; or
Two years of college education from an accredited college or university, and six (6) months of work experience, including internships, research positions, or other experience, relevant to the duties described in the job description.

Customer service, sales, and/or outreach experience with ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written format.
Word processing, spreadsheet, database, PowerPoint, and internet proficiency.
Possession of a valid driver’s license and willingness to drive a City-issued vehicle as needed (a vehicle is provided)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Requires an indicated interest and aptitude in those skills associated with community outreach, environment-focused education, public service or a related field and a willingness and ability to acquire the needed skills through training and work experience.

Exempt Employment Status - This is an exempt appointment with an anticipated duration of three years, contingent upon City budget conditions, demonstrated competence and professionalism in the first year of employment. Participation in this program does not guarantee future employment with the San Francisco Department of the Environment or the City and County of San Francisco. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.
