Company Description

At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Job Description

Introduction

Do you have expertise in instrumentation, metrology or precision measurement? Are you ready to apply your skills in a unique scientific and cryogenic environment?

Join CERN’s Cryogenics Team at the core of designing, operating, and maintaining the world’s most advanced cryogenic systems—essential to the Large Hadron Collider and other flagship experiments. From high-precision sensors to diagnostics and system optimisation, you’ll ensure the reliable performance of complex installations using liquid helium and nitrogen.

In this role, you’ll contribute to studies, developments, major maintenance, and exciting technical challenges—developing rare expertise and problem-solving skills in one of the world’s most cutting-edge laboratories.

 This position is organised in the Technology Department, Cryogenics (CRG) group and Instrumentation and Controls section (IC).

Functions

As a Cryogenics Instrumentation Technician, you will:

  • Support the installation, operation, and maintenance related to cryogenic instrumentation systems and associated radiation-tolerant conditioning electronics (e.g., temperature transmitters (TT), pressure transmitters (PT), level transmitters (LT), flow transmitters (FT), and electrical heaters (EH)).
  • Contribute to calibration and testing activities for cryogenic instrumentation systems (TT, PT, LT, FT).
  • Assist with design, specification, procurement, installation and commissioning of the cryogenic instrumentation for the High Luminosity cryogenic system upgrade.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues in cryogenic instrumentation systems supporting particle accelerators and associated experiments, contributing to optimal and reliable system performance.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., controls, electrical and electronics) to ensure the reliability, availability, and continuous improvement of cryogenic systems.
  • Monitor and report on contractors' compliance with safety and quality standards during maintenance and installation interventions.

Qualifications

Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Metrology or a related field.

Experience:

You Have Demonstrated Experience In:

  • Conducting technical activities related to instrumentation systems or associated radiation-tolerant conditioning electronics (e.g., TT, PT, LT, FT, EH);
  • Applying practical knowledge of measurement chains in operational environments;
  • Diagnosing and resolving issues related to instrumentation and electrical cabling in complex process systems;
  • Calibrating technique using industrial test benches or portable equipment;
  • Reading and interpreting electrical and instrumentation schematics and wiring diagrams.

The following will be considered an asset:

  • Proven capability in coordinating installation work in large environments and maintaining related documentation.

Technical Competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of instrumentation and measurement techniques: including Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) practice in large-plant environments;
  • Preparation of technical documentation for the manufacture, assembly, installation and use of systems;
  • Selection, calibration and installation of instrumentation system;
  • Operation and maintenance of low and medium voltage electrical circuits for process control and monitoring;
  • Analysis and optimisation of performance, specifically in instrumentation systems.

Behavioural Competencies:

  • Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
  • Solving Problems: producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements; finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgements based on all the facts available.
  • Communicating Effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point; selecting the appropriate medium and forum to communicate; ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.
