The City of Fort Worth’s Animal Care and Control Division operates across three core areas: Shelter Operations, Field Services, and Outbound Services. We are seeking a highly qualified leader with well-rounded experience in shelter operations, animal control field services, adoptions, and animal behavior, supported by strong skills in customer service and community engagement. The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise with the ability to build trust, foster collaboration, and advance our mission of protecting both people and animals while ensuring positive outcomes for the community.
Fort Worth Animal Care & Control has built a reputation as one of the most progressive animal welfare programs in the region, supported by elected officials, residents, and community partners. The division continues to expand lifesaving programs such as large-scale adoption events, robust foster and rescue partnerships, transport initiatives that place pets with out-of-state partners, the Community Intake Program, and innovative community engagement efforts like P.A.W.S. for Patriots, volunteer recruitment, and public education programs. These initiatives reflect the City’s commitment to strengthening public safety, improving animal welfare, and fostering a community where residents and animals thrive together.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED supplemented by specialized training in one or more of the following fields: animal welfare, public health, veterinary medicine.
- Four (4) years of responsible experience in one or more of the following disciplines: animal welfare, public health, or veterinary medicine. Including one (1) year of administrative and supervisory experience.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Animal Control Officer Basic Certification and a State of Texas Euthanasia Certificate through the Texas Department of State Health Services within six (6) months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience in a municipal or non-profit animal shelter or veterinary clinic.
- Knowledgeable of animal control local and State mandates/laws; humane care of animals.
- Well-connected and responsive to community interests relative to animal welfare concerns.
- Comprehensive understanding of animal behavior, including stress signals, enrichment techniques, and humane handling practices.
- Certification or training in animal behavior, such as Fear Free Shelter Certification or a CPDT credential.
The Code Compliance Supervisor job responsibilities include:
- Foster a Positive Workplace: Cultivate a team-oriented work environment by supporting collaboration, addressing conflicts proactively, and managing performance challenges constructively.
- Prepare and Analyze Reports: Generate detailed reports on shelter metrics, operational efficiency, and program evaluations to provide data-driven insights for decision-making.
- Respond to Community Concerns: Handle complaints and inquiries about animal-related issues, offering accurate information and exceptional internal and external customer service.
- Behavioral Guidance: Provide expertise on managing animals with behavioral challenges, ensuring safe handling practices and implementing effective training or modification plans.
- Ensure Humane Care Standards: Oversee that all animals receive appropriate daily care in compliance with humane practices.
- Enforce Animal Regulations: Uphold city and state animal control laws, ensuring enforcement aligns with organizational policies and legal requirements.
- Training and Development: Develop and facilitate training programs for staff on animal care, behavior, safety, and customer service.
Working Conditions and Physical Demand
Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting; depending on assignment. Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and intense noises.
Medium work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
