Position Description

The McGill University Department of Emergency Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical) based at the Jewish General Hospital (JGH). This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Jewish General Hospital (JGH) is a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. The JGH is part of the Integrated Health and Social Services University Network for West-Central Montreal (CIUSSS West-Central Montreal), a comprehensive health network that includes specialty hospitals, rehabilitation centres, long-term care facilities, and other health and social service organizations. In 2023, and for the third consecutive year, the JGH was recognized by Forbes magazine as one of Canada’s top employers and was again ranked by Newsweek magazine as one of the best hospitals in the world.
 

The JGH Emergency Department is among the busiest in Quebec, with over 95,000 visits annually. It serves a high-acuity, diverse patient population, with particular strengths in cardiology, oncology, and geriatrics. Faculty members affiliated with the Department of Emergency Medicine bring expertise in areas such as: Emergency Department administration and flow optimization, medical education and academic leadership, health informatics and clinical decision support, virtual care, quality improvement and patient safety, point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS), and medical simulation.

The JGH Department of Emergency Medicine is recognized as a centre of excellence in PoCUS and simulation-based education. It plays a primary role in supervising and teaching medical students and residents from both the CCFP-EM and FRCP-EM training programs. In addition, the department offers PoCUS and simulation fellowships, further contributing to academic innovation and excellence in emergency medicine.

Job Duties

In addition to providing exemplary clinical care, the successful candidate will play an active role in the teaching and supervision of learners at all levels, including undergraduate medical students, residents, and fellows. This includes bedside teaching, participation in formal academic activities, and involvement in curriculum development where appropriate. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of academic emergency medicine in a dynamic, high-volume teaching environment.

Faculty members at McGill are also expected to contribute to service and governance activities within their clinical department, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the broader university and professional communities. This includes participation in departmental committees, educational initiatives, and collaborative academic projects.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates Must:

  • Hold an MD degree, and must hold, or be eligible for, licensure in the Province of Québec;
  • Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
  • Be certified by the Collège des médecins du Québec;
  • Have completed specialty training in Emergency Medicine;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to, and evidence of, high-quality teaching and inclusive pedagogy with a record of collegiality and synergistic collaboration;
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Québec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and healthcare professionals
