As a Peer Specialist, you will serve as a mentor, advocate, and motivator to individuals with mental health and/or substance use disorders. You will provide non-clinical support rooted in your personal recovery experience, guide individuals in navigating services, and help them build meaningful connections in the community. Your role will be key in supporting treatment engagement, recovery goal-setting, and long-term success through empowerment and encouragement.

  • Key Responsibilities:
  • · Serve as a role model and source of hope by sharing your personal recovery story
  • · Collaborate with individuals to create recovery-focused goals and personalized treatment plans
  • · Provide transportation to and from appointments and accompany individuals to services when needed
  • · Assist individuals in accessing community, medical, and recovery resources
  • · Facilitate or co-facilitate group education and support sessions
  • · Offer mentoring, advocacy, coaching, and emotional support
  • · Encourage and empower clients to make independent, healthy life choices
  • · Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support when necessary
  • · Build strong, supportive relationships to promote ongoing engagement in recovery
  • · Ensure accurate and timely documentation in compliance with regulatory standards

Bachelor's degree in one of the following fields of study: Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Education, Criminal Justice, Family Studies, Counseling, Recreational Therapy, Human Services, Human Development, Child Development, Gerontology, Behavioral Science, Rehabilitation Counseling

Or...

Associate of Applied Science in Behavioral Health Support degree from an approved institution

Or....

Work experience in a related human services field may substitute for educational requirements. Related fields may include direct support such as case management, residential support, developmentally disabled support, vocational rehabilitation, and more. Four years of qualifying experience minimum or a combination of education and experience equaling four years required.

Or....

Qualified Addictions Professional (QAP) - CADC, CRADC, CRAADC, CCJP, RADC-P, RADC, CCDP, CCDP-D

  • Additional Qualifications:
  • · Must be 21 years of age or older
  • · Must possess a current driver’s license, have an acceptable driving record, and current auto insurance
  • · Must be willing to self-identify as a present or former client of mental health and/or substance use services OR self-identify as a person in recovery
  • · Must present evidence of a sponsor and participation in a 12-step program if asked
  • · Requires one year of direct and personal experience with the mental health system as a primary consumer
  • · Able to complete a state-approved Certified Peer Support training program and other required trainings within six months of employment
  • · Capable of communicating clearly and professionally in both written and verbal formats
  • · Knowledgeable about peer support principles, recovery resources, and the mental health and substance use treatment system
  • · Must complete all initial and ongoing required training, background checks, and compliance certifications
  • Physical Requirements:

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally (exists up to 1/3 of the time) and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently (exists 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects.

Requires walking or standing to a significant degree or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls, or requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
