Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role

We have an opportunity for a dedicated and motivated educator to teach computing at the Joint Institute between the University of Waikato and Hangzhou City University in Hangzhou, China, as part of an agreement where the University of Waikato is offering its Bachelor of Design majoring in Interface Design (BDI) at the campus of the Hangzhou City University in Hangzhou, China.  

We are looking for a dynamic individual who will bring professional and academic experience to be part of a team dedicated to excellence in teaching. You will have the skills and experience to teach Computer Science papers for students in the BDI degree. 

The salary will be in the range of CNY 388,000 to CNY 460,000 per year dependent on qualifications, skills and experience brough to the position. This is a full-time role, based at Hangzhou City University (NZUWI) in China.

Ko wai koe? – Who are you?

You should have a PhD qualification in Computer Science and demonstrated experience teaching to large and small groups of students. This role will require the ability to teach core computer science topics for design students, such as programming, software architecture, user experience design (UX), full stack programming for web, and Interface design for web and mobile.

Experience working in an international organisation is strongly preferred. Knowledge of Chinese culture, experience of teaching across cultures and the ability to work with students for whom English is not their first language are all important requirements. Teaching will be conducted in the English language

We are proud of our Joint Institute at Hangzhou City University (HZCU) which is designated as an Institute authorised to deliver NZ (University of Waikato) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited degrees. Currently the Institute offers undergraduate degrees in Design, Media, and Finance. All teaching is conducted in English. Operating since 2017, the Institute in Hangzhou has 16 staff and an enrolment of 1,000 students.

The successful applicant will be an international expert and employment compliant with the regulations of the provincial government. These regulations stipulate who is eligible for legal employment as a foreign expert with regard to obtaining work permits and visas. 

The appointment will start ideally in January 2026.
