Job Description
Ohio Department of Public Safety - Ohio State Highway Patrol
Report In Location: 1583 Alum Creek Drive, Columbus 43209
Work Hours:
- Normal Schedule will be Monday thru Friday
- 7:00am to 3:00pm
- On call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
The Ohio State Highway Patrol Provides:
- Casual work uniform for general work assignments. All uniforms, shoes, and laundry services provided.
- Take home vehicle available for most field assignments.
- All work tools will be provided by the state. No personal tools are necessary.
- 8-hour workdays with paid lunch period
What You'Ll Do:
- Independently install, repair, test &/or perform preventative maintenance on complex electronic & communication equipment in Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) facilities & vehicles, &/or at other state agencies;
- Comply with Federal Communication Commission (FCC), state & other regulations related to communications & other electronic equipment.
- Perform basic level testing of network service connectivity for radio related systems & configuration of mobile data computer terminals to complete repair of peripheral devices;
- Install &/or program routers & other network related equipment for radio related systems, radio template configuration & programming, in-vehicle video systems, & public address systems;
- Travel throughout district to perform regular or emergency work; Assist district &/or posts with maintaining inventory control of electronic equipment;
- Assist in designing & engineering needed electronic systems for OSHP posts &/or vehicles;
- Act as the secondary liaison within the district for the deployment, equipment programming, & set-up &/or tear down of the division’s command vehicles, tactical communication vehicle, & sky watch towers;
- Install radio related software on computers located throughout the state of Ohio;
- Inspect equipment at division locations & report findings in need of attention;
- Instruct & train users of the Multi-Agency Radio Communication System (MARCS) for all division personnel & if approved by the TCS Commander other police agencies within the district;
- Provide training & technical support on electronic equipment &/or system users for all division facilities & other law enforcement agencies throughout the state;
- Serve as a district liaison for communications & interoperability communication planning between federal, state, and local agencies.
- Assist supervisor with maintaining proper inventory; Requisition supplies & parts as needed;
- Monitor changes in the FCC rules & regulations;
- Make recommendations & proposals regarding the purchase or use of equipment;
- Assume duties of subordinates during absence or emergency;
- Train & develop subordinate technicians in job duties, electronic knowledge, theory & FCC, state & other regulations;
- Perform other related duties as required in order to install, repair, test & perform preventative maintenance on complex electronic & communication equipment.

Qualifications
Completion of two-year technical program in electronics or radio communications AND 24 mos. exp. in electronics or radio communications position; for positions requiring travel, must possess AND maintain valid driver’s license per Section 4507.02 (A)(1) of Revised Code.
-Or completion of associate core program in electronic engineering AND 24 mos. exp. in electronics, telecommunications, or radio communications position; for positions requiring travel, must possess AND maintain valid driver’s license per Section 4507.02 (A)(1) of Revised Code.
-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualification For Employment noted above.
Note: To meet the minimum qualifications through completion of a 2 yr. technical program, applicants must be able to verify that the technical program consisted of a minimum of 21 credit hours upon completion.
Job Skills: Telecommunications Systems
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT:
A Federal Communications Commission – General Radio Telephone Operator’s License or Amateur Technician License, must be obtained within three (3) months of the candidate’s hire date, & maintained throughout employment.
Unusual Working Conditions:
Exposed to high voltages, inclement weather, dust, dirt, fumes, loud & constant noise; exposed to mosquitoes, rodents, wasps & poisonous snakes at remote tower sites; installations & repairs require working in confined spaces such as under vehicle dashboards & in vehicle trunks; on call 24 hrs., 7 days per week.
This position is essential, meaning the duties this job performs are critical to the continued operations of the Ohio Department of Public Safety during a public safety emergency (OAC 123: 1-46-01 & DAS Directive HR-D-11). This position will be required to report for duty during any public safety emergency.
